Well if they can't come back at least they have the Wiggins dunk.

Sid Bream You My Love (Leee), Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:28 (three years ago)

did someone replace Kerr's playbook with the Harlem Globetrotters one? why are they just chucking it all over like that

frogbs, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:34 (three years ago)

lol bron running halfway out of the building

frogbs, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:36 (three years ago)

lol at the teenage girls sitting next to bron and ad

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:42 (three years ago)

yeah what is that

dubs saving their focus for an even numbered game when they know they won’t have to deal with a locked in ad

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:43 (three years ago)

yeah I guess if you’re gonna play every other game do the odd ones so you play good in game 7

Clay, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:51 (three years ago)

it’s smart really

Clay, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:51 (three years ago)

Dubs in 8

frogbs, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:51 (three years ago)

man how do you get absolutely cooked by Year 20 Lebron

frogbs, Sunday, 7 May 2023 02:55 (three years ago)

trading blowouts is a lame excuse for playoff hoops

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 7 May 2023 03:34 (three years ago)

agree, and was just saying this to my wife. these series are falling into an alternating intensity / alternating blowouts pattern that feels right on brand with a league where the players just seem to be less and less focused on playing basketball.

alpine static, Sunday, 7 May 2023 03:47 (three years ago)

i think its just bad luck that they're coming out that way other than maybe the lakers/warriors series no idea whats going on there

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 04:08 (three years ago)

i dont think thats fair, i think its less a function of players not caring and more of the variance that comes with the game being higher scoring and faster paced. if one team is on their game and shooting well and the other isnt, its just so easy for a game to get out of hand.

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Sunday, 7 May 2023 04:10 (three years ago)

Warriors in particular seem prone to that kind of variance. I mean they just don't charge the basket. also they all play like total garbage every third game

frogbs, Sunday, 7 May 2023 04:17 (three years ago)

celtics and nuggets seem like better teams who lost to a really strong individual performance each, no real swing in intensity there thats just normal playoff stuff sometimes the weaker team's guy goes off otherwise there would be a lot more sweeps

and the other two series, well you just cant expect much from low seed vs low seed can you

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 04:23 (three years ago)

Warriors and lakers best players are old so being able to bring your A game every other day isn’t really feasible. And Dray got in foul trouble too. Warriors needed an outlier performance something like what d lo gave and didn’t get it.

Spottie, Sunday, 7 May 2023 04:44 (three years ago)

look at that

The Lakers, Nuggets, Heat and Celtics are all up 2-1 in their respective playoff series.

setting up the big reveal that we've been in the bubble this whole time the past few years

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 15:18 (three years ago)

makes a lot of sense when you think about it

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 15:19 (three years ago)

still some way to go on this but the heat & celtics in particular are poised to play in 3 of the last 4 ECF with the one off year being the post-bubble season where the “offseason” was barely two months long & those teams coincidentally put up no fight in the first round

J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 May 2023 15:47 (three years ago)

i would be curious what the data said about this but my guess would be if you looked at whether there were more alternating blow outs in playoff series in the last 2-3 years than in the rest of NBA history you’d prob find it was all a fiction of the imagination. as humans we tend to think that everything was better in the past…

J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 May 2023 15:52 (three years ago)

should also be noted that the focus on playing basketball is surely at an all time high as evidenced by maniacal year round training increasingly complex and intense style of play etc

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 15:58 (three years ago)

if anything the nba is —too optimized—

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:00 (three years ago)

yeah with the current pace and intensity of the game is it really that surprising that some guys can't put up their best performance in consecutive games when the games are even 2 days apart

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:03 (three years ago)

for some reason i always remembered them getting an extra day off every time the series changed cities but i guess i was imagining it

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:05 (three years ago)

i do think there are prob more blowouts now because as bise said of 3pt shooting variance and fast pace, but that also made lead one to the question what is a blowout, you see big leads but you also see big comebacks, a ten point lead used to be a big deal in the nba now its some sort of joke, you see one totally wiped out in 90 seconds in seemingly the majority of games now

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:06 (three years ago)

fast pace shouldnt actually increase variance on its own should it? more possessions per game = lower variance. but the 3pt effect is huge

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:07 (three years ago)

i guess transition play is higher variance is what it is

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:08 (three years ago)

2-3-2 with some extra travel days would probably be better for hte players. didn't they have 2-3-2 at some point or am i thinking of baseball

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:09 (three years ago)

2-3-2 was the finals format for a while

slai gorgeous-alexander (m bison), Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:10 (three years ago)

2-3-2 is bad from a series pacing perspective but yeah there should be extra travel days in the current system

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:24 (three years ago)

― ciderpress, Sunday, May 7, 2023 12:08 PM (twenty-three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

i think it might reduce variance over all but in any individual game more possessions gives a team a chance to get further ahead

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:33 (three years ago)

cider, you’re right about pace/possessions… one of the reasons why the university of virginia often gets upset in the NCAA tourney is bcuz they play at a glacial pace & never allow themselves to build a lead on much less talented teams. or it’s why a viable football strategy against a high powered offensive team is to run the ball a ton and kill the clock

but 3 point variance is still a phenomenon bcuz you can never hit a representative sample of 3 point attempts in one basketball game, no matter the pace. we’re often judging these games based off a limited sample of the lowest percentage shots in basketball & so sometimes just, say, 3 or 4 misses in either direction can completely change the outcome of a game. over the course of a 7 game series, the warriors shooting usually wins out but of course in any one game they’re liable to miss 6 or 8 threes they might make on another night & get blown out

anecdotally it feels like to me, in the regular season, the increase in pace/possessions leads to fewer blowouts bcuz any team is just a hot 4 minute shooting stretch away from cutting a 22 point lead to 10 points. i do think we see certainly way more games now where one team is up by i.e. 20+ points at half and then the game is tied before the end of the third quarter & that phenomenon feels 3 point variance driven to me (again w/in such small sample sizes of even 1 quarter of play)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:44 (three years ago)

transition play is actually very low variance bcuz every team is great in transition as you’re often taking the easiest shots in the game

J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:49 (three years ago)

i think it might reduce variance over all but in any individual game more possessions gives a team a chance to get further ahead

― lag∞n, Sunday, May 7, 2023 12:33 PM (twenty-two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

if the team is better then yeah more possessions gives them more chances to prove that. it shouldnt lead to more blowouts in both directions though, just one

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 16:59 (three years ago)

one team can be better one day then the other team is the next

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 17:03 (three years ago)

tho when you have less evenly matched series you do see the only one team gets blowouts pattern

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 17:06 (three years ago)

i would like to see the stats on if there are more blowouts now, i would guess that there are on purely point differential, but maybe not if you consider what the point differential means

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 17:08 (three years ago)

i doubt there are significantly more but yeah i'd love to see the stats

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 17:44 (three years ago)

also wonder if theres something going on with more reactive strategies/gameplans? the winning team not anticipating the adjustments that are going ot be made vs them

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:54 (three years ago)

the celtics are disrespecting PJ tucker like beyond what is normal. they just had a guy who could’ve rotated like 2 feet to the left to contest a corner 3 and literally just stood there watching tucker shoot it (shot was not even close)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:54 (three years ago)

that was funny

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:55 (three years ago)

i havent been following these series close enough to know baout that though other than the celtics one

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:56 (three years ago)

lol, Harden and Harris just watching a 3 and neither bothering to box out a lone Tatum

This machine bores fascism (PBKR), Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:58 (three years ago)

i think theres something to the idea that the team doing the adjusting has an advantage

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:58 (three years ago)

jfc celtics missing one million open shots

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 19:59 (three years ago)

yeah i guess my question is has the game changed in a way that amplifies that effect

ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2023 20:00 (three years ago)

think prob schemes just have more going on which makes more to change

lag∞n, Sunday, 7 May 2023 20:04 (three years ago)
