yeah it was understandable from both sides of course. the trade should've happened before the season but there weren't enough desperate teams at that time to create a market

i think the nets just wanted to give it a shot with that team too

i think they were prob ok w/ that as the fall back option but i think if the trade they ended up doing w/ dallas was on the table in the offseason they would've pulled the trigger. it seemed like at the time that the only offer was the stuff the lakers ended up sending out to get rui & the utah guys

idk the fact that they were asking unreasonable things for kd makes me think they were committed to giving it one last shot

maybe. i think if the suns had offered in the offseason what they ended up trading for KD the nets would've done that deal then too. their trade requests on both guys turned out by definition to not be unreasonable, the market just changes midseason when teams have a more accurate read on their places in the pecking order

what they ended up getting for him was more in line with expectations and yeah maybe that wasnt there in the offseason but it just didnt really seem like they were trying to get it done

i feel like you can clearly see how all this flowed from phoenix and dallas' perspective

"hey we were just in the west finals, we don't need to do anything drastic to this roster" -> "oh shit we're middle of the pack at best in the west and may even fall into the play in" -> desperation trade at the deadline

you could make a very reasonable argument that bridges, johnson, crowder + four firsts & a swap is > jaylen, smart, four firsts & four swaps. in fact i would make that argument! when you consider that jaylen is a major FA risk this offseason, bridges is on one of the best longterm contracts in the league, the celtics' future feels far more stable than phoenix's so their picks are prob worth less and the fact that swaps are generally useless, i think phoenix's offer is stronger and the nets played this all pretty perfectly in the end (minus the part where they screwed up so bad they had to trade KD in the first place)

it is fucked up that the nets landed in their feet after concocting this whole scenario feel like they should be punished

marcus smart quietly on a potentially really bad contract that might've been a negative value asset for the nets based on how he's played this year. jaylen def would've walked this summer. they would have 4 picks from the team w/ jayson tatum on it & some swaps that would prob never convey. honestly would've been a nightmare of a trade for the nets

maybe the nets would've re-maxed kyrie and maxed out jaylen to keep him there as part of the flat earth society but i think this outcome was way better for them

i mean they wouldve had to talk to jaylen and see if he was going to stay obvs if hes walking thats a non starter, their request mightve even been more than that tho like it had rob in there too idk i tried not very hard to google it but there were too many results

i can't imagine a plausible trade from any other team including boston that would exceed what they got from the suns

i feel like the suns trade is about what i wouldve thought theyd get except that then bridges trurned out to be much better than everyone thought

four picks a high end starter a rotation guy and a swap for a consensus top five guy seems normal, except that kd is old and injury prone, and then the high end starter immediately looks like an all star

i mean i would not have done it even not knowing what we do now about bridges but im not surprised it happened

which is not to say that there was another comparable deal out there cause big deals are hard to pull off, unless youre danny ainge

idk getting the suns top 3 wing players, two of whom are very young, plus four unprotected firsts is one of the craziest trade packages in league history & def more than i thought any team would end up giving up for KD. it's maybe only surpassed by the gobert trade lmao. or the KG/nets trade

bridges thing isnt that surprising, he was extremely efficient scorer in lower usage, clearly had room to be taking more shots successfully

utah got four unprotected 1sts (one of theme was just the 14th pick that year not sure if that counts as unprotected) two swaps markkanen and sexton for mitchell

idk i didnt hear anyone say he was about to go off he wasnt really considered to have the scoring repertoire to do it xp
