i thought double dribble was two hands touching the ball at the same time?

i think it's picking the dribble up and then dribbling again. sometimes you'll see it w/ big men who dribble in the post, pick up the dribble to make a move, get stopped and then put the ball back down to dribble again

but also... if you pick up the ball to pass it or shoot it and then are the first person to touch it after the pass or shot, that's a double dribble or travel? i think that's more what i was seeing w/ that CP3 play, it's almost like a self-pass before the pass

to me its a carry cos he alters the direction of the ball dribble path under the ball. but you could argue a self pass too which would be a travel i guess? now im confused

either way i think we all agree that chris paul should be punished to the fullest extent of the law

heres the rule book the names carry double dribble etc i think are just colloquial anyway, also lol note the mitt romney relevant passage

Section II—Dribble

A player shall not run with the ball without dribbling it.
A player in control of a dribble who steps on or outside a boundary line, even though not touching the ball while on or outside that boundary line, shall not be allowed to return inbounds and continue his dribble. He may not even be the first player to touch the ball after he has re-established a position inbounds.
A player may not dribble a second time after he has voluntarily ended his first dribble.
A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again.
A player may dribble a second time if he lost control of the ball because of:
A field goal attempt at his basket, provided the ball touches the backboard or basket ring
An opponent touching the ball
A pass or fumble which touches his backboard, basket ring or is touched by another player.
PENALTY: Loss of ball. Ball is awarded to the opposing team on the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.

seems like double dribble is voluntarily ending the dribble and then dribbling again which includes holding the ball touching it with two hands or a self pass, and a carry is putting a hand under the ball and carrying it from one point to another

paul’s been doing that for years, I do it in pickup sometimes lol, it’s fun as hell. if executed correctly I don’t think it’s a violation, the hand starts more on the three o’clock position on the ball and you just use the upward momentum of the ball to get a little grip on it
