for sure a guy that can kill your team singlehandedly on any given night
― four square ups... no punches thrown (Spottie), Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:25 (three years ago)
looking at some of the publicly available advanced stat numbers (real plus minus, 538 raptor) and he still rates as a helpful player bcuz of his defenseif you classify him as a SF he’s still far above replacement level. if you wanna look for some actual replacement level wings the rest of memphis’ roster will give you a good selection
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:36 (three years ago)
yeah he takes a ton of pressure off ja
― four square ups... no punches thrown (Spottie), Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:43 (three years ago)
i think i would hate him if i rooted for memphis bcuz he def does shoot too much & overall just seems like an annoying guy. but he's gonna check the best ball handler on other teams and is pretty good at it, basically by definition that kinda guy is valuable to each individual team in the league
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:54 (three years ago)
the fact that he doesnt understand his ideal offensive role, low usage outlet guy, is troubling tho
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:56 (three years ago)
obvs some parallels to marcus smart who had some of the worst shot selection ive ever seen when he came into the league but has since figured it out cause hes a smart player, brooks is kind of a dumb smart if you will
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 17:58 (three years ago)
for this season
RPM
brooks - 1.47 (99th overall)smart - 1.26 (105th overall)
538 raptor
brooks - 2.5 (T-79th overall)smart - 2.6 (T-76th overall)
win shares per 48
brooks - .033 (176th overall)smart - .101 (100th overall)
win shares hates brooks apparently but the other two stats would tell you they've basically been the same player this year. i think w/ these guys in particular since their value is so slanted towards defense there's a lot of noise w/ their numbers as far as these catch all stats go... they're certainly not gospel. i think most ppl would still rather take marcus bcuz he's a decidedly better offensive player. brooks is more of a wing on the other hand, can prob hold up better against true wing stars than marcus. but yeah, it's the same kinda guy
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:10 (three years ago)
tbf those stats are worthless tho
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:11 (three years ago)
would any team take two dillion brooks over marcus idk i wouldnt
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:12 (three years ago)
tho tbf that considers the fact that brooks has not the ideal mental makeup
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:14 (three years ago)
i don't think they're worthless, but they're more guideposts than anything. i think it's interesting to check your perceptions against those numbers. i think smart is the better player... brooks isn't bad though. again i wouldn't wanna root for him but at the end of the day that defense does matter. i would prob have two versions of dillon brooks than one marcus smart, yeah.
his three point shooting has gone in the tank but early in his career he was in the mid 30s and even this year he's still shooting about 80% from the line. maybe he'll find his shot again
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:16 (three years ago)

― J0rdan S., Thursday, February 2, 2023 1:10 PM (three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink
idk marcus is maybe the best player at guarding up in the league but i wouldnt want either of them on a leet wing other that switches or spot duty
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:16 (three years ago)
brooks has 3 inches and 25 pounds on marcus, that has to matter to some degree, probably. or maybe not.
brooks would never make the pass that marcus made to tatum in game 1 of the nets series last year. the mental side of it does matter, brooks is a hot head and not in a good way most of the time. but a guy who regularly checks the best ball handler w/ the kind of intensity he brings to the game... i think every team is gonna love having that kinda guy around even if he has obvious warts to his game
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:21 (three years ago)
yeah marcus is a very good playmaker, tho his lack of scoring hurts that somewhat, the benefits of brooks game are pretty easy to see but on the other hand it wouldnt be that hard to pick up a comparable better player, defensive specialist guard isnt a super hot type, brooks does have skills beyond that but at least right now hes not really applying them
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 18:27 (three years ago)
and hes very clearly a weird vibes guy fwiw
teammates seem to like him. would be hard to see that team having the f u edge without him.

its really just shot selection, you watch them play and hes got at least 4-5 shots per game that leave you scratching your head. lots of weird floaters, contested threes. warriors basically let him hoist in the playoffs, think the grizz won a game cos he was hitting but you play those odds every time in 7 game series.

brooks is a top 5 wing defender
― micah, Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:03 (three years ago)
idk hes top ten in fouls jaden mcdaniels is the only non big man ahead of him https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/player-stat/fouls-personal
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:07 (three years ago)
fouling is really bad tho its obvs not the be all end all but do you really trust dillon brooks to do the right thing to make the right play do you trust him do you trust dillon brooks
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:11 (three years ago)
top 5 wing defender bottom 5 offender
― four square ups... no punches thrown (Spottie), Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:12 (three years ago)
brooks is top ten in fouls because that's an important part of his game and he knows it. he can't succeed in guarding the best players by relying on pure athleticism, so he's always right on the edge of fouling them and often crossing the line. smart otoh relies more on anticipation and less on physicality.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:20 (three years ago)
fouling is just bad tho if he cant guard without fouling its bad
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 19:59 (three years ago)
hes got great defenders behind him too
― lag∞n, Thursday, 2 February 2023 20:00 (three years ago)
― lag∞n, Friday, 3 February 2023 6:07 AM
well jalen is a top three wing defender so there is a correlation there
in fact the non bigs at the top of that list are pretty consistently their teams best wing defender and a selection of great defenders in general
― micah, Thursday, 2 February 2023 20:02 (three years ago)
dave chappelle is like two steps away from that dillon brooks look, it won’t be long imo

As others have noted, Jrue Holiday's 10 years between All-Star appearances is the longest gap in NBA history. I have the previous record as six years shared by Johnny Green (1965 to 1971) and Bernard King (1985 to 1991). https://t.co/fJ4I8kjhA3— Kevin Pelton (@kpelton) February 3, 2023

not really sure what jrue has done this season that he hasn't done in a lot of other seasons but i'm glad he's the answer to a trivia question now.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2023 01:38 (three years ago)
harden really should have gotten in
― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2023 01:40 (three years ago)
yeah its kinda messed up that harden did what everyone wanted by playing less selfish his teams is thriving and he got rewarded by getting kicked out of the all star game lol
― lag∞n, Friday, 3 February 2023 01:48 (three years ago)
makes sense
Just so people know, a lot of coaches do not care about picking the all-star reserves. I've been in coaches meetings where they spent five minutes putting their selections in.Think about it, they are more locked in on their team and their upcoming opponents. It is what it is.— Mo Dakhil (@MoDakhil_NBA) February 3, 2023
― lag∞n, Friday, 3 February 2023 01:51 (three years ago)
sounds like literally no one would care then if they removed the coaches from the process so we should probably get on that
― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2023 01:55 (three years ago)
let the media folks do it imo
