sorry was confused that would be a carry and not a double dribble. could be called but he does it smooth enough to not make it look too bad

double dribble is with two hands carry with one more or less

double dribble is just less fluid i think? like picking up a dribble and holding it and then dribbling it again. versus the smooth little carry motion

i think it's picking the dribble up and then dribbling again. sometimes you'll see it w/ big men who dribble in the post, pick up the dribble to make a move, get stopped and then put the ball back down to dribble again

but also... if you pick up the ball to pass it or shoot it and then are the first person to touch it after the pass or shot, that's a double dribble or travel? i think that's more what i was seeing w/ that CP3 play, it's almost like a self-pass before the pass

to me its a carry cos he alters the direction of the ball dribble path under the ball. but you could argue a self pass too which would be a travel i guess? now im confused

Section II—Dribble

An opponent touching the ball
A pass or fumble which touches his backboard, basket ring or is touched by another player.
PENALTY: Loss of ball. Ball is awarded to the opposing team on the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.

seems like double dribble is voluntarily ending the dribble and then dribbling again which includes holding the ball touching it with two hands or a self pass, and a carry is putting a hand under the ball and carrying it from one point to another

paul’s been doing that for years, I do it in pickup sometimes lol, it’s fun as hell. if executed correctly I don’t think it’s a violation, the hand starts more on the three o’clock position on the ball and you just use the upward momentum of the ball to get a little grip on it
