NBA has suspended Suns owner Robert Sarver for one year from the Suns and Mercury organization based on league investigation. Sarver has also been fined $10 million and complete training program focused on respect and appropriate workplace conduct.

glen taylor got suspended over the joe smith contract thing. the NFL has suspended dan snyder and stephen ross in the last year as well. i agree that it seems generally unenforceable aside from the ban on being in the arena

i mean what else could it entail? can they stop him from making money off of the team for a year? i guess theres some revenue sources that go through the league office that they can withhold?

i think it’s supposed to encompass a ban on being involved in team activities, roster building & marketing decisions etc. but no idea how they would enforce that

the sterling option would be good but i bet that has mostly to do with the other owners deciding youre too depraved even for them, which is a pretty high bar

there was a legitimate player revolt over sterling to the point of nearly protesting a playoff game which i think really forced the league’s (as a consortium of owners) hand in that situation. the suns seemed to take more of a “we just work here, man” approach to the sarver stuff which is totally understandable for various reasons incl them having real championship goals to worry about. but i think that helped keep the story on the back burner. also they had sterling on tape which always matters

regardless of how he could massage the messaging, it is simply true that owners have different rights than employees do. not just in the NBA but in any business. silver can't fire an owner, for one. so you're already inherently bargaining yourself down on punishment to begin with

i haven't seen the press conference and maybe silver does come off particularly bad but at the end of the day owners run sports leagues and commissioners exist to do their bidding. NBA fans like to pretend that the NBA is different & more virtuous than other sports leagues but this situation is laying bare that NBA owners are going to protect themselves and send their commissioner out in front of the firing squad to give slimy responses to questions he can't truthfully answer just like the NFL and MLB do

Based on some conversations with NBA people around the league there is speculation that the NBA did not want a legal battle with Robert Sarver. So they put the report out there to allow it to run its course - Sponsors reaction, Minority owners reaction, Media, Fans etc..
