i think for the heat the calculus is pretty simple. if they're in a bidding war w/ phoenix they won't have to trade bam bcuz phoenix won't be putting a comparable player on the table and so it's just about whether they're willing to put in more picks than phoenix. and if it's an open market then other teams will be able to put together better packages and they'll just keep their assets for mitchell or whatever else

considering the suns have one more pick available to trade than the heat and they famously do not value the draft pretty sure theyre winning that one

the knicks have a ton of picks they can trade and are rumored to love him

unless the jazz are in love with herro or something which i guess is not impossible

correct. the knicks make way more sense than the heat on a number of levels it just depends on whether mitchell can credibly force his way to one team, my guess is probably not. i also think ainge would try and rip riley's beating heart out of his chest in that trade so idk

going back to the nets -- i think it was nate dnucan who pointed out that the nets obligations in 2023 and 2025 are pick swaps w/ the rocekts who will def be a bottom 5 team next year and will prob be a lottery team again in 2025. so there is a path for the nets to give up on this idea of "competing" with an "all star level player" and instead just get a mega picks haul for KD, draft an elite prospect next year's draft and then go from there armed w/ whoever that is plus whatever picks they get. getting bounced in the first round w/ siakam and van vleet and getting the 20th pick just feels like beating your head against a wall, to me

yeah those picks they sent to houston are a sunk cost they should just take the best deal they can get, but there is prob some urge to save face particularly considering the celtics just went to the finals with a team built on ripping them off, but then i guess the reasonable part is they dont have the usual incentive to be bad bottoming out isnt as good as it usually is

if they could get a very young good player or two guys with some sort of potential thats prob best where siakim and van vleet are both already 28

i don't feel like there is a team out there that has a very good young player they would be willing to give up and who is also close enough to contending that trading for KD makes sense. the closest i can come up with is jarren jackson + desmond bane but i feel like the grizzlies wouldn't actually do that

to me the realistic "all star" level players for KD are, like, siakam and brandon ingram. and at that point i'd prob just go the mega picks haul route

i would too but that route gets sean marks fired in the next year or two, unless tsai is totally on board with rebuilding this thing again and getting back to a nice 45-win team that has a little buzz and wins a play-in game.

my point being it is very hard to prognosticate this since we don't really know how the nets see their team in a post-KD world

yeah that's true xp. tsai is definitely in that new ownership phase where he will pick the shortest but most destructive route to perceived relevance

buying a sports team is the dumbest thing to do with billions of dollars theres like a 50% chance everyone in the city will end up hating you
