Fred VanVleet
For decades NBA fans have been able to quickly find out which players lead the league in turnovers. This season, that honor belongs to Russell Westbrook, who has coughed up the ball 240 times.
But aside from steals, the NBA hasn't always tracked turnovers from the individual defensive side of things. Now it does.
The NBA stats department has begun keeping track of forced turnovers, which helps flag the defenders who cause the blunders that ruin possessions. This metric encompasses a lot more than just the traditional steals, which are convenient to tally but often don't paint the whole picture. Consider the example of VanVleet, whose defensive performances would go unappreciated without these newer and more comprehensive metrics.
According to the NBA's internal models, VanVleet is forcing a league-leading 3.0 turnovers per game this season, significantly higher than his 1.6 steals-per-game average. In fact, VanVleet is on pace to lead the league in forced turnovers for the third straight season.
For decades, we have leaned on steals as the best way to approximate this effect, but VanVleet's numbers this season show why that can be misleading. According to NBA estimates, of his 173 forced turnovers this season, only 34 were credited as a VanVleet steal -- 75 were credited as a steal by a different Raptor, and 64 were non-steal turnovers (out of bounds, violations, offensive fouls, etc.).
At 6-foot-1, VanVleet spends 30% of his time guarding the opposing ball handler, eighth most in the NBA. Despite his relatively slight size, he has an uncanny ability to blow up plays at the point of attack. He ranks second in the league in passes deflected at 3.9 per game, and a bunch of those tipped passes end up in the hands of a Raptors teammate who then gets credit for the steal.
VanVleet's unique ability to cause screwups helps explain why Toronto ranks first in the league in opponent turnover percentage, and second in the league in points scored off turnovers (19.2 points per 100 possessions).
It's been three years since VanVleet's defense on Stephen Curry in the 2019 NBA Finals helped the Raptors win their first title, and he has only gotten better since. Pound-for-pound it's hard to find a more impactful defender in the NBA than VanVleet, but he has yet to make an All-Defensive team. That could change this year.

No opinion here except that I don't think I've previously seen switches as a tracked defensive stat, interesting

yeah but gobert is bad and mitchell is good
― lag∞n, Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:53 (four years ago)
yeah i mean if mitchell demands a trade there is prob no point in trying to force him to be there, ultimately. but i also think if you can still get value for gobert on that deal he’s on they should seriously consider that, irrespective of whatever else. i think tim mcmahon has said a few times that if you trade one you might as well trade the other and prob anything else of value on that team and just fully rebuild. but they seem like a franchise that will never want to tear it down that severely
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:57 (four years ago)
idk i think danny ainge would be happy to have 16 draft picks over 4 years or whatever it ends up being
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 3 April 2022 19:03 (four years ago)
yeah maybe he could convince the owner. but i feel like for a small market franchise that basically has like one stretch of being bad in the last 40 years it might be a tough sell to completely tear apart a good team. it doesn’t seem like anyone has a read yet on what the owner would wanna do
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 April 2022 19:10 (four years ago)
in a vacuum if you can move off that gobert contract you should imo
― lag∞n, Sunday, 3 April 2022 19:14 (four years ago)

― Heez, Sunday, 3 April 2022 21:09 (four years ago)
the gobert to dallas stuff worries me. i get in theory why they would be interested in him & just in general there’s only so many all stars who shake loose. but i feel like they’ve found a pretty good style of playing right now with smaller mobile bigs & it would be a bit odd to me if they went that hard after a guy like gobert. it’s not like he isn’t mobile but it kind of feels like repeating the sins of the zinger trade
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 April 2022 22:00 (four years ago)
it worries me based on the size of the contract and age of the player more than anything. he's a much better fit than zinger, as mcmahon said his love language is lobs and he would get a ton of them while providing a baseline level of defense that would make them an extremely low-variance regular season team. gobert defense + luka offense is going to be a top-4 seed way more often than not.
but he's older than you would want and he makes a fortune and i tend to agree that if they can afford to be patient something better will shake loose.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 4 April 2022 01:19 (four years ago)
i like the way they play defense right now, they have multiple guys in kleiba and powell (and even finney smith) who can guard wings and play center. getting gobert totally changes your defense and maybe that's worth it but maybe you get to the playoffs and your defense breaks down. mcmahon was saying that gobert is more mobile than ppl give him credit for, but you're not playing a switch heavy, any guy can guard any guy style w/ him. and the other thing is that yeah he's a great lob catcher but in last playoffs his offense sucked bcuz he can't do anything w/ the ball and you can just stick a wing on him
― J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2022 02:46 (four years ago)
if i were them i'd much rather go for mitchell. dinwiddie has showed that if they have two scoring guards (along w/ brunson) to go w/ luka they can be very dangerous. they can play them all together but also have guys to sustain the offense a bit when luka rests. maybe a guy like mitchell just couldn't abide by playing w/ luka and if you want to acquire a second "star" it has to be someone who is cool w/ not having the ball in his hands, in which case you're gonna be looking at bigs. but i'd try and find a jordan clarkson, tyler herro type sixth man bcuz i'm not sure how reliable dinwiddie will be in the long run, but that kind of player seems important to them now
― J0rdan S., Monday, 4 April 2022 02:52 (four years ago)
the reporting about mitchell has been pretty clear, he wants to be the main guy in a bigger marker
