it's true that fewer people than i expect have a perspective on the whole league, like this isn't the nfl or mlb there's 6 or 7 guys per team who matter and it's not all that hard to keep track of them. that's part of the appeal!

i am over here reading that romeo is "a 3 and d monster in the making" but at this rate "the making" is going to go well into his second nba contract

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:29 (two years ago) link

totally missed that they were sending this years pick over in the white trade, dont think that was reported at first, trade makes more sense now

League sources tell MassLive that the Celtics’ will send a top-4 protected first-round pick in 2022 to San Antonio. That pick will roll over to top-4 protected in 2023 if it doesn’t convey in 2022. If it remains protected through both drafts, it turns into a second-round pick in 2023 if it also doesn’t convey next season

"a 3 and d monster in the making" but not a "a 3 and d monster in the NBA"

EZ Snappin, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:31 (two years ago) link

yeah the spurs get this years pick which will be like 18 in what is said to be a bad draft, and they also got a swap in 2028 which people are similarly flagellating themselves about. idk, you have to give something to get something when the something is a guy entering his prime on a pretty cheap contract with years of team control.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:33 (two years ago) link

yeah before i knew about the pick i had no idea why the spurs would do that trade, trying to get off a long term deal, pop being nice to ime

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:34 (two years ago) link

generally you dont like to give up a 1st for a bench player but white could really be one of those starting quality bench players

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:36 (two years ago) link

if this goes well he'll be playing starter-level minutes. by all accounts he's a willing passer with good defense. a great type of guard to put with the Js.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:40 (two years ago) link

yeah i mean i like it i like the move i like their moves today, they really went all in on their big defense first team, doing their thing, being themselves, and they got under the tax line too

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:42 (two years ago) link

to me the biggest thing it showed, not that i ever really had doubts, is that the plan is to keep building around jayson and jaylen

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:44 (two years ago) link

yeah thats a no brainer

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:45 (two years ago) link

the east is obvs very freaking stacked this year but if this improves their already sick D they could make some noise, also if tatum remembers how to shoot, it would be cool to beat philly in the playoffs again

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 02:45 (two years ago) link

honestly derrick is a tremendous defender, one of the best charge-takers there is and hes the best shot-blocking guards this side of d wade and danny green. he should really have more all-defense hype than dejounte. hes not the most athletic guard, but he's a smart and patient pick n roll leader, has some nice hesitation moves. his 3pt shot has been rough this year though its started to fall more lately, and he'll likely get some better looks with the j's drawing so much attention. he'll make an impact right away

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 11 February 2022 02:56 (two years ago) link

getting someone who can run some offense should be a plus

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:00 (two years ago) link

i'm super excited about that. it's desperately needed on this team. and while there seems to be some consternation about his shooting (especially vis a vis richardson who has rediscovered his own shot a bit this year), iirc white's best shooting came in the bubble so it's pretty obvious what that was about, and he should get some good looks on the celtics while anything he does off the dribble will be a bonus.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:08 (two years ago) link

richardson was shooting too good didnt seem sustainable

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:10 (two years ago) link

the last time the spurs were in the playoffs he was excellent too. i really liked him. big george hill getting traded vibes rn.

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 11 February 2022 03:10 (two years ago) link

richardson looked like a corpse at the start of the year but grew into a nice role and found himself a bit (at his lowest minutes and usage in 5 years, tbf). this is all very well and good but he was a reclamation project, not a key part of the team going forward

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:13 (two years ago) link

yeah he was good for them but ultimately hes a pretty limited player white can actually do some stuff

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:15 (two years ago) link

plus the team has plenty of forehead now

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:16 (two years ago) link

im gonna be sad now, derrick's dad follows me on my hoops twitter burner

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 11 February 2022 03:18 (two years ago) link

lol nice

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:19 (two years ago) link

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:21 (two years ago) link

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:22 (two years ago) link

well once the playoffs start

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:23 (two years ago) link

fine i'll compromise, derrick can go 12-12 every night while the c's rack up l's

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 11 February 2022 03:23 (two years ago) link

hmm i dont think theyll lose if that happens

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 03:36 (two years ago) link

no, everyone else will miss all their shots, derrick will be just there shaking his head like "cmon guys, do something"

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 11 February 2022 03:42 (two years ago) link

what if they're so bad that he demands a trade.... to the spurs............

Clay, Friday, 11 February 2022 04:04 (two years ago) link

...holy fuck

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 04:05 (two years ago) link

Brad Stevens: "We will look to fill our roster out with guys that are skilled."

“Skilled players” the new “3>2”

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 11 February 2022 14:41 (two years ago) link

gotta agree with brad here skills are good as far as filling out the roster goes

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 18:21 (two years ago) link

The only point of those Q&A sessions with the media is to give the sports writers something to put inside quotation marks as filler after the first three or so paragraphs where they've exhausted all there is to tell, but must write another eight paragraphs after that.

"we're looking for people who play basketball professionally"

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 February 2022 19:29 (two years ago) link

given the state of boston's bench the last few years i can understand why finding "guys that are skilled" would be a legitimate goal for brad

ive read a bunch of stuff about these trades and everyones talking about theis as a third center, injury protection, long term replacement etc but no one seems to be hip to the possibility that the celtics are just planning on going big all the time, which makes a lot of sense considering they sent out two perimeter players and got back one and a big

like right now horf is starting at the 4 and then playing a lot of 5 the rest of the game but what if theis took those 5 minutes and horf plays mostly 4 with grant backing him up, theyve been having so much success with the big starting unit why not do it all the time, and it doesnt make a ton of sense to trade for theis who has a pretty big contract if youre not really planning on playing him

lag∞n, Friday, 11 February 2022 23:27 (two years ago) link

welcome derrick

Derrick White will play tonight, I’m told.

i don’t understand how dudes just play for a team right away. isn’t there a system? plays??

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 12 February 2022 00:27 (two years ago) link

i mean yeah but also all plays are kind of the same

lag∞n, Saturday, 12 February 2022 00:28 (two years ago) link

spread pick n roll, read n react, switch on d. its all the same.

Spottie, Saturday, 12 February 2022 00:35 (two years ago) link

i think players who step in to play immediately after a mid-season trade are more likely to get out of place on defense, where quick team communication and instant reaction are more critical. offense is easier to pick up.

smart 3 steals in the 1st

i think there is something to this and i forgot how much money he's making tbh. it is definitely a hedge for when they move on from horf first and foremost IMO, but as you say there's no reason he can't absorb some minutes at the 5 this year and form a solid 4-man rotation along with rob, al, and grant.
