they were a top 5 seed this year, the nuggets will be w/o murray for most of the season, clippers may not have kawhi for most of the season, phoenix and utah were both extremely healthy this season. i don't think the mavs will get worse, not sure how much better they'll get but they're gonna bring back basically their entire team or use their cap space to replace hardaway. they also have one of the 5 best players in the NBA. it wouldn't take much for them to be top 4 in the west come january or w/e

they were 5th but tied record with 6 PDX and 7 LAL. the west is only gonna get more competitive next year again. only two teams will be tanking to start (hou/okc). and no FA wants a part of dallas right now (have they ever?).

a lot hinges on if luka shows up engaged and in shape. they dug themselves a pretty big hole early this season.

Let’s not forget Luka doesn’t like Zinger. Zinger seems like one of these guys who really needs his teammates to embrace playing to his strengths. Not saying he’s gonna go Full Ben Simmons but easy to imagine things falling apart for his role on the team in a pretty major way. That’s part of why Kidd is a bad idea - basketball mind aside, the dude seems to be a drama magnet

the margins separating a lot of these teams are going to be pretty thin as always in the west and the mavs have a top 5 player in the conference, there's plenty of scenarios where they're aren't playing as one of the top 4 seeds in the first half of the season but there's plenty of scenarios where they are, more than you guys are allowing

i do think it is really gross that they're hiring kidd given what we know about how women were treated in that organization. as a coach he'll prob be average or something, his teams were mostly above .500 in milwaukee and brooklyn and he'll have better talent in dallas, but they really should've had enough self awareness to avoid that one

my main memory of Kidd was that he would run the same defensive sets every single time, once the opposing team figured it out they could pretty much always get a guy open from 3 which is why the Bucks gave up like 120 pts/game despite having some pretty great defenders

good on the cavs i guess if they can sell high before they get locked into his first big contract, if they don't believe in him. but given the organization we are discussing, the idea that they have an alternative plan that is better in any way is unlikely to the point of impossible. do they think someone is gonna trade them a top 5 pick in this draft for him?
