i think nets whole approach was super lame every step of the way, first of all moving the team to new york at all new york already has a team move somewhere that doesnt have a team thats a no brainer, secondly calling it brooklyn you want to appeal to the whole city whats someone from queens supposed to do now its dumb, also getting super into the brooklyn marketing shit which is just corny and everyone was already sick of it anyway, jay-z being part owner biggie uniforms what have you all the most transparent corporate try hard bs, failed minimalist uniforms and court etc all booty, mostly new york sports teams are olde timey and people love it, new york goes wild for gritty old shit, they should have named them like the new york long shirts or something, thats another thing the name the nets is the most generic possible name that also happens to be cursed by association with a lame franchise, then the way they built the team just immediately traded for aging superstars which failed, and now they traded for better superstars but super teams are just not fun, they should have built organically get some homegrown young stars that the team couldve grow with that people could get into, not just hey heres james harden who btw is a huge weird asshole and will prob leave in two years, smh

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 01:56 (five years ago)

haha kyries a bitch

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 01:57 (five years ago)

boban getting into the game, carlisle is on tilt

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 01:58 (five years ago)

if zinger cant play d might as well play boban hes a better scorer and rebounder

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 01:59 (five years ago)

the idea that a large american city can support two teams in any of the big sports that have separate but equally viable fanbases with distinct cultures and history and values.......it has barely ever happened.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:01 (five years ago)

the clippers were also playing a really small lineup when they put boban in

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:02 (five years ago)

finding a back up 5 who isn’t also a giant stiff would be a good offseason goal for the mavs

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:03 (five years ago)

yeah like what self-respecting New York person, who is obviously a knicks fan since birth, is gonna be like welp that’s it I’m a nets guy now without getting clowned on relentlessly by every single person they know

Clay, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:05 (five years ago)

xp i think that's what dwight powell is supposed to be

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:06 (five years ago)

the yankees and mets coexist for historical reasons that are fairly clear and a result of nyc going from three baseball teams to one to two. i don't really know why the jets and giants work and don't want to know tbh. and that might be it?

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:07 (five years ago)

people you see a nets games are like a professional couple not originally from new york who regret buying that ticket package and leave in the 3rd quarter, or a bunch of celtics fans depending who theyre playing

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:10 (five years ago)

cubs and white sox do pretty well seems like but thats a super old arrangement

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:11 (five years ago)

pretty funny LA went from zero to two nfl teams, seems doomed

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:13 (five years ago)

yeah cubs/sox is like a distant third, there's a lot of history but the sox seem to function like a small-market team most of the time.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:15 (five years ago)

nobody is gonna defect from knicks fandom but brooklyn has its own culture/population that is distinct from manhattan and that’s a fairly new phenomenon, generally speaking, in terms of where the population of new york city is distributed. the rise of/increased awareness of brooklyn as a distinct culture combined with the knicks being awful for 20 years i think means that there will be a genuine nets fan base. which isn’t to say they’re going to have some rocking arena or anything but new york city geographically lends itself to separate/geographic identities i.e. the mets being in queens. if you were born in brooklyn 5, 8, 10 years ago why would you become a knicks fan?

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:17 (five years ago)

yeah la nfl is a great example, like it's probably economically viable in the same way that the net and clippers are economically viable because the tv rights are still worth a lot and you can get enough people coming to the games, but they'll never really be part of the social and cultural fabric of the city which is the actual cool thing that a sports team can do.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:17 (five years ago)

i'm sure the nets are converting some actual fans over the course of this but i'm not sure it's a significant number....like the project that the clippers and nets seem to want to take on is a project that's measured in decades.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:20 (five years ago)

which isn’t to say they’re going to have some rocking arena or anything but

― J0rdan S., Sunday, May 30, 2021 10:17 PM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

well what exactly is the point then

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:20 (five years ago)

oh i think the nets will have a far more genuine fan
base and cultural foothold 40+ years into brooklyn than the clippers currently have in LA and it won’t
be close

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:22 (five years ago)

why tho

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:22 (five years ago)

apparently, tonight's clips v mavs isn't worthy of ILH's notice. maybe it's too painful, I dunno.

What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Monday, 31 May 2021 02:23 (five years ago)

LA is one city with neighborhoods that don’t compare in a number of ways to new york boroughs also the lakers are good with many champions and famous players whereas the knicks have none of those things

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:24 (five years ago)

need more only-game-in-town cities instead of doubling up, the nba already has like 4 or 5 but more is better

ciderpress, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:24 (five years ago)

the fascinating contrast to the nets and clips is when a team appears in a place where there were no teams and it goes really well, like they put the sonics in okc and magically there were a bunch of okc thunder fans. seems like that's going to be a pretty durable fanbase too.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:25 (five years ago)

why tho

bcuz ppl identify as being of brooklyn either via moving or growing up there and this is only going to increase as manhattan continues to become a place uninhabitable to most ppl. there is no geographic distinction between the clippers and lakers literally they play in the same arena so if you identify with being of LA you just have to be a weirdo or contrarian to become a clippers fan and not a lakers fan

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:26 (five years ago)

― ciderpress, Sunday, May 30, 2021 10:24 PM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

haha i don't necessarily disagree but one of the major business criticisms of the nba is that they've invested in some extremely small markets

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:27 (five years ago)

― J0rdan S., Sunday, May 30, 2021 10:26 PM (four minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

speaking as someone who lived in brooklyn for some ten odd years i think youre overselling the borough pride angle, its not like it doesnt exist but also i dont think most people care that much, also a teams fanbase really needs to be regional and all that pandering brooklyn bs probably plays against that, and pealing fans off an entrenched fanbase no matter how dysfunctional the team is just a tough way to make a living

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:31 (five years ago)

clippers small line up just murdering the mavs defense

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:33 (five years ago)

rondo making threes it must be summer

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 02:41 (five years ago)

its crazy london has like 25 soccer teams that all are popular i guess that comes from soccer being the only sport

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:45 (five years ago)

The Porzingis from before the knee injury just isn’t coming back. I understand why they rolled the dice on it.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:51 (five years ago)

xp oh yeah from a business perspective its obviously better to get that seattle team back or whatever

i can too it had exactly the shape of the deal youre looking for but man so many red flags too

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:56 (five years ago)

why did they call the chuck and ernie podcast the steam room, thats the imagery theyre going with

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 02:59 (five years ago)

xp yeah i liked it at the time, i didn't feel the price was insane and the theory of him as a player is so good.

hahah i took this as a sign that we're low on searchable podcast names

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:00 (five years ago)

i think it’s not unreasonable to ask zinger to develop the ability to score on players half a foot shorter than him at this point in his career. but the thing you’re really seeing in this series is that when teams go small he doesn’t have the ability to defend in space he’s a complete turnstile out there trying to move side to side & there’s no way that is changing. the only option is to score his way out of that problem but they’re not using him as a screener for pick and pops in this series and he can’t score inside the arc which is just crazy given his size

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 03:06 (five years ago)

btw can we take a minute to observe the fan who threw a water bottle at kyrie he is exactly as you would imagine him

Zinger’s defense just gets worse and worse.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:27 (five years ago)

wild the clippers were down 19 in game three after losing the first two at home thats about as close to dead as you can get without actually dying

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:29 (five years ago)

xp with all due respect kyrie isn't handling shit himself

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:29 (five years ago)

in related news i would like to congratulate the clippers for deciding to play hard

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:31 (five years ago)

it doesnt even seem like they are that much

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:34 (five years ago)

this could explain it

— Serge Ibaka (@sergeibaka) May 31, 2021

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 03:36 (five years ago)

the main development is the clippers looking like they’ve played basketball together at any point previous to the current game which did not appear to be the case in the first two games

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 03:36 (five years ago)

rondo just shouldn’t sign with a team until the last possible point in the season upon which he chooses whichever championship contender is in most obvious need of a point guard

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 May 2021 03:41 (five years ago)

wld keep him fresh too
