Saddest sight on pre-game was a fan walking in with a Hachimura jersey.

Not a good day of hoops thus far

the mark eaton news is such a bummer. memorable player and it seems like he had a particularly vibrant life post-basketball. i never knew this about him:
The 7-foot-4 big man was known as one of the NBA’s great defensive presences with perhaps the league’s greatest origin story. Eaton was spotted by a junior college assistant basketball coach driving by the Marc C. Bloome Tire Store in Orange County, California, while working as an auto mechanic. Eaton was two feet taller than his customers.“I was making $20,000 a year and I didn’t see any point in giving that up to go to college,” Eaton recalled.Eventually, Eaton was persuaded to give junior college basketball a shot; he could continue his mechanic job during the day and take classes and star in hoops games at night at the junior college, Cypress. UCLA came calling, and offered Eaton a scholarship to transfer, but Eaton played extremely sparingly — hence waiting to hear his name called until the fourth round of the 1982 NBA Draft, despite his height.

eaton’s career was winding down just as I was getting into hoops so he was sorta one of the first myths of basketball to me: my dad spoke of him as monstrously tall and able to pull any shot out of the air no matter how high you shot it, etc. this is probably around the time we were being taught talk tales of the west in school so he’s really mixed up in my mind with paul bunyan and that kind of thing, and it seems impossible for such a man to die let alone that he ever really lived
― Clay, Sunday, 30 May 2021 02:34 (five years ago)
*tall tales obv
― Clay, Sunday, 30 May 2021 02:35 (five years ago)
incredible trash talk battle going on between mike conley and dillon brooks right now. brooks scored on gobert and ran down the floor jawing in conley’s face while denying him the ball & then conley immediately hit a step back three and was right in brooks face the entire time down the floor
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 May 2021 02:35 (five years ago)
i love that clay, i remember getting into basketball cards and early in that phase i got an eaton card with a picture of this giant on it and i was like so....this is the type of man that plays basketball i guess.

lol I have probably been disappointed with most depictions of Thor because they do not resemble mark eaton
― Clay, Sunday, 30 May 2021 02:45 (five years ago)
otm rip mark eaton

It may even be useful to start a rolling hoops obituary thread one of these days, as many of the star players from the 1970s will begin to die as they reach their own 70s or early 80s.

― Wayne Grotski (symsymsym), Sunday, 30 May 2021 03:43 (five years ago)
mem got the lead for a second then got whooped after that. dillon brooks way too trigger happy in the 4th (always)
― Spottie, Sunday, 30 May 2021 06:01 (five years ago)
yeah brooks has been on a run of relatively efficient games, and I was wondering when he'd revert back to form (as someone who picked him up and dropped him twenty times this season)
― Wayne Grotski (symsymsym), Sunday, 30 May 2021 14:58 (five years ago)
he has some marcus smart about him
― lag∞n, Sunday, 30 May 2021 15:58 (five years ago)
ha, that makes sense. i keep seeing him look good in games and then check his season/career numbers and am not sure exactly how good he is.

― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Sunday, 30 May 2021 18:38 (five years ago)
the hawks are fun. the knicks are still the knicks.
― What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Sunday, 30 May 2021 18:40 (five years ago)
jfc randle misses a tough layup through contact gets his own rebound and misses a point blank layup
― lag∞n, Sunday, 30 May 2021 18:42 (five years ago)
Yeah if they don’t go all the way I’m gonna insist the Bucks would have won the title with Bogdan this year
― frogbs, Sunday, 30 May 2021 18:48 (five years ago)
the contrast in this series between the Hawks (have a plan, know which matchups they want to attack, attack them relentlessly) and the Knicks (literally none of that, also possibly blindfolded) is incredible and i hate it— Albert Burneko (@AlbertBurneko) May 30, 2021
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Sunday, 30 May 2021 19:04 (five years ago)
the knicks defensive strategy of hoping the other team misses a bunch of wide open threes finally collapsing in game 76

I’ve never seen a player walk over to the refs to jaw at them after a free throw like bron just did...literally anyone else in the league that’s a technical foul
