if the mavs win this series, score one for building your team around complementing one awesome superstar (though there ain't too many lukas out there). like someone said upthread, kawhi may be happy to just chill in cali for the remainder of his career, but it is an interesting contrast between him as the man with a perfect complementary roster winning the chip in toronto, vs trying to build a superteam and flaming out.

i kinda think that model at least as far as how it is with luka, kawhi was a little different, some have called it heliocentrism where one guy just has the ball all the time is too easy to defend at the highest levels also is an exhausting style for the star to play, issue here as mentioned upthread seem more like the clippers just arent that interested in defending

that's a good point, how sustainable is that model over multiple years. kawhi in toronto was like one of those starting pitchers who gets traded to a contender midesason and has a sub-1.00 ERA for their final 15 starts of the season (sorry to compare to a far inferior sport)

for this reason i would take the hawks development over the mavs since the luka/trae draft

hawks def have better players than the mavs, mavs front office has been pretty terrible for a while, which has been obscured by the fact that they have an alltime great coach and now a great player too but i def dont trust them to put it all together for luka

in all seriousness re kawhi/pg its underrated how early an age individual defense starts to decline, its so correlated to athleticism and peak athleticism is at like 24 years old

coming off the worst surgery, hes too tall, and had generally had trouble staying healthy, also if you just look at him the way he kinda shuffles around and seems really inflexible through his core and hips idk

he also seems to suck as a human

i'm happy to make the case for the mavs player development. jalen brunson was their second round pick in the luka draft and he's one of the best back up guards in the league. dorian finney smith rates as an above average wing player, he was undrafted. maxi klieber is also a good wing player, he was undrafted. they plucked seth curry off the scrap heap and turned him into a player of value. the porzingis trade seems bad until you remember that tim hardaway jr has arguably been the third best player in this clippers series... ppl thought he was one of the worst contracts in the league. they've built a pretty good team around luka out of a lot of spare parts, especially when you consider the shooting/wings they've been able to find.

and, you know, three teams at the top of the draft passed on luka doncic and they traded a single extra first round pick to get him. there might not be a better front office move for 10 more years. should count for something

the hawks have hit on a lot of their moves, made some great trades. the mavs are also a much better team. if the hawks were in the west i think they would've been in the play in games. if the mavs were in the east they'd have been the 4 seed w/o much difficulty. one team has luka doncic the other doesn't.

Why did they sign up for this

The Clippers were the #1 shooting 3pt team in the league by a wide margin. Only 4 times did their opponent make 5 or more 3's against them, with the Clips losing all 4 times... twice against (u guessed it) the Mavericks.
Mavs have done it twice more to go up 2-0.

I just don't see where the mavs are going at this point. not to say their roster is bad this year, but i don't see who they have to develop around luka

yeah i mean its nice they got all those guys with second round picks etc but if they want to contend they need more very good players

hawks team is very young so not really an apples to apples comparison as far as this seasons performance, i would rather have luka and start from there but still

yeah who knows maybe the young hawks won't pan out and the mavs will become a free agent destination. i just don't see what their plan is other than surrounding Luka with a bunch of mediocre players
