i really don’t understand what the clippers think they’re doing. the whole point of trading away your entire future for kawhi and paul george was to have two of the best 2 way wing players in the league, and then in the playoffs when luka is lighting your house on fire and pouring gasoline everywhere you’re just like “oh yeah we’ll switch pat bev onto you no big deal at all. in fact we’d LOVE to have our 6’1 point guard be repeatedly destroyed by a 6’7 all star ball handler.” like, the mavs didn’t even need to try and set the pick, the clippers were rolling out the red carpet for pat bev to get that match up with even the hint of a screen

it's also on kawhi and PG on a larger level. it doesn't matter what defense ty lue was calling, if either of them wanted the luka assignment they could tell ty lue to throw his defense in the trash bcuz they want the responsibility of locking him down. those two guys have more equity in that organization than any coach, GM etc. david blatt called a play for kyrie and lebron was like "yeah we're not running that play but thanks" and hit a game winner. the defining feature of the PG/kawhi clippers has been an expectation that they would win just by showing up w/o any indication that they care enough to really dig deep and actually make it happen & it hasn't changed in this series

btw the clippers put up 48 points in the second half... third leading scorer in the game was reggie jackson w/ 15 points. marcus morris 9 points, pat bev 3 points, zubac 2 points, ibaka 2 points, rondo 4 points. terrance man 8 points. luke kennard the most over achieving player in the NBA w/ another DNP-CD reclining very easily on that $40 million contract. their roster is just kind of a disaster

if the mavs win this series, score one for building your team around complementing one awesome superstar (though there ain't too many lukas out there). like someone said upthread, kawhi may be happy to just chill in cali for the remainder of his career, but it is an interesting contrast between him as the man with a perfect complementary roster winning the chip in toronto, vs trying to build a superteam and flaming out.

i kinda think that model at least as far as how it is with luka, kawhi was a little different, some have called it heliocentrism where one guy just has the ball all the time is too easy to defend at the highest levels also is an exhausting style for the star to play, issue here as mentioned upthread seem more like the clippers just arent that interested in defending

that's a good point, how sustainable is that model over multiple years. kawhi in toronto was like one of those starting pitchers who gets traded to a contender midesason and has a sub-1.00 ERA for their final 15 starts of the season (sorry to compare to a far inferior sport)

for this reason i would take the hawks development over the mavs since the luka/trae draft

hawks def have better players than the mavs, mavs front office has been pretty terrible for a while, which has been obscured by the fact that they have an alltime great coach and now a great player too but i def dont trust them to put it all together for luka

in all seriousness re kawhi/pg its underrated how early an age individual defense starts to decline, its so correlated to athleticism and peak athleticism is at like 24 years old
