A few weeks back, Daryl Morey appeared on the Rights to Ricky Sanchez podcast, and in the course of answering a question about the state of analytics with respect to individual defense, had this to say: “I would say public-domain, all-in-one defensive measures are all really bad. I think internally, several teams have some pretty OK ones, not good. Defense is hard…it’s so dependent on what the coach wants them to do.”

imo catch all stats have developed as much as they can and are very limited by the inputs available

thats true but i think even more than that the big problem with basketball stats is described in the last sentence there, everything in basketball is under the scheme, and furthermore the scheme is schemed for team cooperation

the catch all offense stats are also really bad, maybe not as bad as the defensive ones but very bad none the less, the big advantage they have is its easier to measure offensive usage

all stats are going to need to be understood in the context of team and scheme, and the catch all stats make it very hard by being very complicated and particularly by attempting and failing to contextualize their results themselves, where granular stats lend themselves more to contextualization, tho with many of those you have the problem of bad data eg all "contested threes" are not equal

its truly remarkable. and other teams know he's the only option so he's getting blitzed and box-1d and facing the best defenders on the other team every game. his usage has gone up by like 5 points in that stretch and he's gotten even more efficient. he really needs to stretch the limits and shoot 25-30 threes a game on his own
