you know what i dont understand is the pelicans have the worst defense in the league but they have all these guys who are supposed to be good defenders: lonzo adams bledsoe ingram some of their bench guys seem like they shd be able to play d idgi

zion obvs a very bad defender but also he shouldnt be hes the strongest and most athletic person in the world and moves his feet like a guard

Gotta think Zion will be a plus defender in 2-3 years max, he just has to learn the game and how to conserve his mental energy out there

maybe he turns out to be a 3 and d guy who is also very good at passing, assuming he stays a decent 3 pt shooter which is pretty dicey tbh

yeah the thing about the passing its hard to make good passes in the halfcourt if youre not breaking down the d, maybe in more of a 3 n d wing role which he conveniently has the size for his passing can come into play attacking closeouts, a situation where the d has already been broken down for you

having those ball handling and passing skills could be very valuable in a role playing wing where in a point guard you kinda just need them

Yeah when I think of the 3 and D archetype I picture corner 3s but Lonzo off ball would be better served up high

i think all those guys deserved it over him at that time but of course none of them are as good/impactful. but yah def that type of 'snub' is the kinda thing that fuels guys like him.

i might suggest that at least some of the time these centers are open from 3 not because the defense wants them to be but because they are being guarded by centers, who tend to be bad at guarding the the 3pt line, also! if youre getting open looks and can knock them down at good rate then take them, who cares if the defense wants you to, lol theyre wrong

yes, i think that article saying "it's what the defense wants" is a pretty major oversimplification. if a ballhandler drives, the defensive 5 leaves the perimeter to contest, and the ballhandler finds the offensive 5 for a wide-open 3, i don't think that's what the defense wanted per se.

also his big chart is full of a bunch of guys who play mostly the 4, unless you can show me contest% when the guy is actually playing the 5 i don't think it's very informative.

yep, i have lots of problems with that article (to say nothing of his annoying lede - how many stretch 5s did "we" think there were?).

in addition to lagoon's good point, doesn't the fact that (some of) the actually effective stretch 5s nonetheless get uncontested looks actually highlight the value of the stretch 4-5? Like, the players guarding them have been forced to choose between protecting the paint or trying to stay with their man. I would imagine that some percentage of contested 3s from guards and wings are contested because their defenders don't have that conundrum.
