first round picks arent nothing, starting quality players arent nothing, taking on $10m more in salary also not nothing

lag∞n, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:02 (five years ago)

It just seems like an amazing coup for the thunder that they took chris Paul, who was considered such a negative asset that they got a bushel of picks for trading an inferior player, and then the next year got assets for him.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:02 (five years ago)

cp played himself into tradability

Spottie, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:03 (five years ago)

this was good for both franchises

Spottie, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:04 (five years ago)

i like oubre as much as the next guy but his contract is up after this year, if the suns extended him at his current $15m or more when they have other cheaper possibly better wings we'd all be killing them for that.

― call all destroyer, Monday, November 16, 2020 2:00 PM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

they have bridges and cam johnson who are arguably better than oubre...
― J0rdan S., Monday, November 16, 2020 2:00 PM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

having 3 good wings is actually technically speaking a good and desirable thing, you can even play them all at once, or you could pay a 35 y/o pg $10m more than your old pg and that wing made combined idk

lag∞n, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:05 (five years ago)

xp i don't entirely disagree but i think there was an imperative out of houston to do that particular deal which presti recognized and used to drive the overpay.

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:06 (five years ago)

if anyone can produce a single statistic showing that kelly oubre is anything more than a slightly above average player at best i'm all ears. his VORP last year was 0.7. box plus minus was -0.5. real plus minus was -3.05 (83rd among SF). by win shares he was roughly as good as monte morris, alec burks, and KCP. 538 raptor has him as the 108th best player in the league, right next to thomas satoransky and alec burks. this is an expendable player.

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

who cares about the suns salary cap? what are they spending that money on? ricky rubio and kelly oubre?

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:09 (five years ago)

they also still have $18M in space this offseason to add a player and the #10 pick. that's pretty good!

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:11 (five years ago)

not caring about middling players, draft picks, salary space are all classic bad franchise habits

not understanding basic concepts like opportunity cost etc etc

lag∞n, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:14 (five years ago)

also taking a promising team and trading players in order to make the playoffs this year, which iirc was what happened to the last promising suns team

― lag∞n, Monday, November 16, 2020 2:14 PM (two minutes ago)

a classic bad franchise habit is also to pick an endless amount of young players and never convert that into winning i.e. suns, wolves, magic, hornets, kings, cavs etc

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:18 (five years ago)

i mean i think a lot of the enthusiasm for this trade is based on the assumption that the suns are just always gonna basically suck so why not have cp3 for a couple years which fine but it doesnt make it an actually good trade

lag∞n, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:20 (five years ago)

i am glad we have figured out all the inflection points on this trade

- how good you think cp3 is likely to be going forward
- what you think the actual opportunity cost was to the suns
- where the suns are as a franchise/what you think they should be doing

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:22 (five years ago)

if they make the playoffs and keep booker happy then its a good trade. pretty simple

Spottie, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:23 (five years ago)

having cp3 on yr team has not always been shown to provoke happiness in his teammates

not understanding basic concepts like opportunity cost etc etc

― lag∞n, Monday, November 16, 2020 2:14 PM (three minutes ago)

there is very little to no opportunity cost to the suns taking on cp3's salary. if the opportunity cost is signing guys like rubio and oubre to above market rate deals to play for my sorry franchise give me chris paul's crazy contract that ends in 2 seasons.

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:26 (five years ago)

the assumption that they couldnt possibly sign anyone beneficial to their team is silly, but of course by making this trade you are also passing up the opportunity to make a different trade

This is an odd list. The hornets like to trade for vets who were successful elsewhere and then they play like shit in Charlotte. They whiff on draft picks a lot, sure. The cavs have made the finals a zillion times.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:32 (five years ago)

Actually trading for CP3 is a classic MJ hornets move

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:34 (five years ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 16 November 2020 19:41 (five years ago)

the vets that charlotte has acquired are like... nic batum, marvin williams, al jefferson, stephen jackson. aka guys who are not even half the player chris paul is

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:46 (five years ago)

the player in this trade most similar to players previously acquired by the hornets is ricky rubio -- a low ceiling vet they had to overpay in order to acquire -- and i think it's good that they got rid of him, unlike certain posters in this thread, such as matt

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 19:59 (five years ago)

the west is going to be even tougher next year and if the suns dont start making serious noise booker will probably just walk when his contract is up. they dont have another two years to wait for oubre to become productive

micah, Monday, 16 November 2020 20:28 (five years ago)

Wait for Oubre to become productive???? He averaged literally twice the points of their other 2 wings... and he's the same age as both of em despite being drafted like half a decade earlier lol. I'm no Suns fan, so if more dilligent followers of the team who watch them regularly are convinced Bridges and Cam Johnson are the future I won't necessarily disagree... but the idea that Oubre ins't productive or a positive player going forward, compared to the 2 24 year old rookie/sophmore wings that averaged like 8/4/1? Anyone drawing those kinda conclusions about their team's future based off the bubble performance are taking a massive gamble IMO.

Sabre of Paradise (trevor phillips), Monday, 16 November 2020 20:53 (five years ago)

well bridges is generally thought to be one of the best young defensive wings in the league. johnson isn’t as good as oubre but is generally providing the same skill set on a rookie deal as opposed to oubre’s $15 million expiring contract. they also have cap space to add more wing help if they need (ppl have mentioned gallo there), plus the no. 10 pick. you usually have to give something up to get something in a trade and the loss of oubre should be easily survivable for them

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 November 2020 22:07 (five years ago)

seems like the sixers should make this happen

James Harden has the Nets and Sixers as his top trade destinations, per @ShamsCharania

we needed some trades to spice this place up again baby!

k3vin k., Monday, 16 November 2020 23:57 (five years ago)

Yeah, Sixers aren't going to do anything without Harden, may not do anything with him, but I'm all for maximum drama at this point.

It seems like simmons for harden is very workable and makes a lot of sense?

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 02:00 (five years ago)

100% tho philly would need to throw in another salary. harden+gordon for simmons+horford matches almost perfectly

discourse stu (m bison), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 02:14 (five years ago)

tho houston has gotta immediately trade westbrook if they do that.

i'm very curious what the draft compensation is

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 04:34 (five years ago)

gotta be at least 2 1RPs

thats really all new orleans cld get? how many picks in there

New Orleans is nearing completion of a deal to send G Jrue Holiday to Milwaukee for Eric Bledsoe, George Hill and what's described as "significant" draft compensation, sources tell ESPN. Teams are still working through the picks in trade.

there it is

discourse stu (m bison), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 04:40 (five years ago)

it's been reported that the bucks never engaged on chris paul. we won't be able to settle this for years but 1 first rounder for cp3 vs. at least 2 first rounders for jrue is going to be interesting to follow.

xp holy shit three first rounders

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 04:41 (five years ago)

blazers giving up two firsts for covington is kinda nuts

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 November 2020 04:42 (five years ago)

i'm sorry, i don't think jrue holiday is even close to that good

want to see the protections on the portland picks but neither is covington
