i often think of nature vs nuture w/the timberwolves too, are our draft picks bad because we pick bad players or is the player's development destroyed because he gets drafted by the timberwolves?

yah both, but also sometimes players dont want to be in a certain place
― Spottie, Friday, 23 October 2020 19:26 (three years ago) link
i don’t think anyone has the intention or desire to bubble again. it was expensive, the ratings were shit, the players don’t want to live in isolation for the entirety of an 82 game season, and you couldn’t have condensed schedules like you did this time around for a full season. the MLB and NFL unbubbled seasons are going to “work” (as in the seasons will be completed even with positive tests and wild schedule rearrangements) so i can’t come up with a reason why the NBA won’t follow suit

yah the bubble wont work for a full reg season even if its compressed a bit.
― Spottie, Friday, 23 October 2020 19:54 (three years ago) link
bill simmons has been on this for over a week, basically saying that they weren't confident enough about having fans for the 20-21 season to wait for march or something, and that preserving the 21-22 season and starting it on time became the biggest priority.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:28 (three years ago) link
also that the ratings disaster convinced them that maybe the october-june schedule is actually the best window for the nba to live in
― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:29 (three years ago) link
what was the theoretical problem with oct-june anyway? who cares if the nfl is on during the first half of the season
― ciderpress, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:33 (three years ago) link
i think there was a theory that starting at christmas meant you could dodge the NFL and then "own the summer" but no one watches tv in july and august, it's just a fact.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2020 20:40 (three years ago) link
thing about the ratings disaster is all sports are down during the pandemic and weirdly in fact all tv is, i saw some chart and the nba was about in the middle as far as sports declines, tho the finals were way down but a lot of the has to do with the fact that it was over as soon as miami got all injured, starting on christmas and shortening the season is generally good tho imo
― lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 00:44 (three years ago) link
and it does allow them to still doge some nfl too, which i think having some overlap is fine maybe even desirable, but also have less overlap is good, and having fewer games is great

― Clay, Saturday, 24 October 2020 00:59 (three years ago) link
yeah they're certainly not alone in the ratings thing (apparently the world series is getting absolutely destroyed). mid-december to mid-june w/a shorter season would be ideal, except for an interminable offseason for those of us for whom ball is life.

― lag∞n, Saturday, 24 October 2020 01:06 (three years ago) link
dec 22nd is pretty quick, but i can at least understand the logic of starting the schedule earlier and cutting the season down a little bit to finish at a more normal time.
i do worry that a non-bubble nba might be more susceptible to rona outbreaks than outdoor sports like football and baseball. and they're probably not gonna be able to keep lou will out of the clubs anymore.

the various christian views are re the particular mechanism of immaculate conception
it's not what you think. the immaculate conception refers to the doctrine that Mary was born without original sin, as the chosen-of-God to become the immaculate (= 'spotless') vessel to bear the Christ child.

...What you're probably wondering about is the virgin birth. Well, the way it gets told is that she was impregnated when the Holy Spirit descended upon her, making the whole operation decidedly incorporeal. And here you thought the Holy Spirit was just some worthless fag-end of the Trinity who never gets to do anything.

I get the economic reasons for the quick turnaround, but we are going to have to read about how this being the cause of every player who gets injured and I don't think it will be totally unrelated.

the teams that went really deep in the playoffs may start slow but everyone will have gotten time off....like as i understand it most guys take maybe a month of doing nothing when their season ends and then get back into training hard. i hope it won't be too bad.

dece estimate tbf
The Millers purchased the Utah Jazz NBA team in 1986 for $22 million; the team is now worth $1.46 billion, according to Forbes. In early 2017, Miller transferred ownership of the Utah Jazz basketball team to a family legacy trust to deter her heirs from selling or moving it.
