Can't remember if it was on ESPN or The Ringer but I just read a retrospective of all the notable big men Lebron has played with, and it sort of singled out Donyell as an important player in LBJ's (and thus the league's) evolution in that he was an early big man who spaced out to the 3 point line. In my memory I think of him more as an oversized wing than a power forward, but I guess maybe that's why.

Are they going to fly city-to-city or go back in the bubble? If they start in Dec and don't go back to the bubble, they'll have positive tests, schedule disruptions, and teams playing with depleted rosters. But first they'll need buy-in from the players' union on any plan, which I think is going to be a pretty divisive issue among players. Interesting times.

i don’t think anyone has the intention or desire to bubble again. it was expensive, the ratings were shit, the players don’t want to live in isolation for the entirety of an 82 game season, and you couldn’t have condensed schedules like you did this time around for a full season. the MLB and NFL unbubbled seasons are going to “work” (as in the seasons will be completed even with positive tests and wild schedule rearrangements) so i can’t come up with a reason why the NBA won’t follow suit

yah the bubble wont work for a full reg season even if its compressed a bit.

bill simmons has been on this for over a week, basically saying that they weren't confident enough about having fans for the 20-21 season to wait for march or something, and that preserving the 21-22 season and starting it on time became the biggest priority.

also that the ratings disaster convinced them that maybe the october-june schedule is actually the best window for the nba to live in

what was the theoretical problem with oct-june anyway? who cares if the nfl is on during the first half of the season

i think there was a theory that starting at christmas meant you could dodge the NFL and then "own the summer" but no one watches tv in july and august, it's just a fact.

thing about the ratings disaster is all sports are down during the pandemic and weirdly in fact all tv is, i saw some chart and the nba was about in the middle as far as sports declines, tho the finals were way down but a lot of the has to do with the fact that it was over as soon as miami got all injured, starting on christmas and shortening the season is generally good tho imo

and it does allow them to still doge some nfl too, which i think having some overlap is fine maybe even desirable, but also have less overlap is good, and having fewer games is great

basketball is deeply associated with winter think its prob good to stick with that at least

dec 22nd is pretty quick, but i can at least understand the logic of starting the schedule earlier and cutting the season down a little bit to finish at a more normal time.

I get the economic reasons for the quick turnaround, but we are going to have to read about how this being the cause of every player who gets injured and I don't think it will be totally unrelated.
