the inevitable outcome of trying to start the season is that players or close contacts will continue to test positive and the league will just end up with egg on its face and have to abort. just give up imo
― k3vin k., Thursday, 2 July 2020 20:15 (five years ago)
yeah k3v otm stop pretending this doesn’t end up with half the players positive in like three weeks
― Clay, Thursday, 2 July 2020 20:22 (five years ago)
counterpoint: two bubbles
The NBA is closing in on signing off on a second “bubble” in Chicago for the eight teams that were not invited to play in Orlando, enabling mini-training camps and subsequent games against other clubs with a target date of September, sources tell ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 2, 2020

I won't lie though, I'm excited to see sports. But I am totally fine with canceling the season; it's definitely the smart move.
It's likely though that next season is toast absent a miracle vaccine.

name of the hotel feels kinda portentous
Once the Celtics arrive at Walt Disney World later today, they will quarantine for roughly 48 hours in their respective hotel rooms at the Grand Destino Tower until they pass two separate COVID-19 tests (24 hours apart).Boston is one of eight teams to arrive today.— Chris Grenham (@chrisgrenham) July 8, 2020

― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 17:25 (five years ago)
so i just haven't been able to bring myself to even look at any NBA news or even this board. Is this shit a total disaster? I mean i'm going to watch hoops if it's on but the championship is so meaningless I don't even care really.
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 17:51 (five years ago)
i watched some of "The Basketball Tournament: TBT" yesterday lol
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 17:54 (five years ago)
its definitely all extremely sketchy and feelbad even if it works. i don't really want to watch anymore, wish they had just focused on figuring out next season instead but now we're probably gonna get 2 weird asterisk seasons instead of 1
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 18:00 (five years ago)
yeah I could hardly be any less enthused for this
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 18:22 (five years ago)
The fact that the entire rest of the season is going to take place at fucking Disney World is some real shit
Anyway, I am completely pumped for some reason! Ha
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 18:25 (five years ago)
gonna save my energy till a week before games start and then do a deep dive into my soul to see how i REALLY FEEL then
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 18:27 (five years ago)
i'm excited, mostly because this seems much more likely to go well than the 20/21 season does. i understand not being excited but i don't think it's particularly sketchy. making everyone go to their home markets first isn't looking amazing but i don't really blame the nba for that.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 18:33 (five years ago)
its def gonna be weird and likely disastrous but im gonna tell you what fellas, im gonna watch some hoops
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 19:24 (five years ago)
my thoughts exactly
― methinks dababy doth bop shit too much (m bison), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 19:56 (five years ago)
I too will watch the hoop no doubt about it. I didn’t think it was gonna happen until players started showing up this week. I’m still not 100% convinced.
― Spottie, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 20:24 (five years ago)
taurean prince out.tenth anniversary of the decision today btw.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 20:58 (five years ago)
I would not tell anyone they shouldn't feel this way, but I think the "choice" is really between 1 weird asterisk season and 0 seasons, because if they don't complete this season, next season may be even worse/more difficult due to which way the numbers are going and the refusal of some states to get their shit together.
― Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 21:50 (five years ago)
oh I'm gonna watch some of it toodon't care about asterisk seasons. I follow NBA to watch best players in the world play, not so evidence can be gathered for some sportsgeek lists or debates down the line.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 22:19 (five years ago)
wasn't the 0 season option going to fuck up a ton of contract stuff for next season?
― the warm seafood salad that exists (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 22:40 (five years ago)
it would have nullified the entire CBA
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 22:46 (five years ago)
yeah, so canceling this year to "focus on figuring out next season instead" would have brought additional issues
― the warm seafood salad that exists (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 23:18 (five years ago)
cad can correct me, but I think the issue was not with canceling this season but with canceling next season entirely.
My only point is that canceling this season in no way helps next season to happen as that will be dictated by how we are doing with the virus then.
And I say this with zero animus toward anyone who says shut it all down until we have a vaccine.
― Tōne Locatelli Romano (PBKR), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 23:24 (five years ago)
ok i didn't realize that. is the cba nullification tied to a certain # of games being played or what?
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 23:53 (five years ago)
iirc if the players had elected not to play this season, the owners would have triggered the force majeure clause in the CBA and essentially ripped up the entire document. i don't think it's related to a # of games but is more generic to cover major catastrophic events.
finishing out this season will help with issues related to next season at least as far as the CBA is concerned. there will probably need to be some adjustments to the way the cap is calculated but i think anyone speculating about what those are is way ahead of themselves.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 23:59 (five years ago)
Ok, I'm wrong:
https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/nba-coronavirus-silver-cba-season-cancelled
Looks like the NBA CBA has a force majeure clause where the owners can cancel if games are suspended for more than 60 days. They've basically been kicking the can down the road.
xp

They should just replace the Nets with the Pelicans in the playoffs and tell all the other bubble teams not to come. It would be safer and it's what everyone wants (including the Nets).
