xp so this isn't about coronavirus risk, right? you've just already played your way into a good contract and now have an excuse that allows you to shed risk of a typical basketball injury in remaining games?
― voltmeter said i had potential (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 June 2020 20:04 (four years ago) link
Probably both
― Spottie, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:05 (four years ago) link
apparently bertans has twice torn an ACL, you can understand it. honestly, if the season had played out normally the wizards would've had no shot at the playoffs and bertans would've shut it down at some point anyway
― J0rdan S., Monday, 22 June 2020 20:16 (four years ago) link
yup. he's going to get paid like $60 million and the only thing that could derail that is another knee injury in a game that doesn't matter.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:17 (four years ago) link
starting to think this really isn’t gonna happen what with Florida being a cesspool and so many employees not gonna be bubbled, just way too likely a major outbreak blows up in everyone’s face
― Clay, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link
If the bubble is going to be a genuine bubble, then all the support staff like cooks and cleaning staff need to be in the bubble, too. Everyone. No exceptions. If they have more than a hundred low-paid support workers going in and out every day, regardless of such folderol as temperature checks as they report to work each day, then the whole scheme will blow up in their faces.

pretty sure Disney has already said that def isn’t happening so
― Clay, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:33 (four years ago) link
i understand where comments like these come from, but i think there is a tendency to overestimate the amount of contact the players will have with the support staff, which to my understanding should be next to none.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:34 (four years ago) link
it's not a true bubble, service staff will be coming and going
― J0rdan S., Monday, 22 June 2020 20:35 (four years ago) link
The players themselves are the most likely spreaders. They should have to wear masks while they play imo.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 22 June 2020 20:36 (four years ago) link
which I was fine with the semi-bubble thing until Florida was like 🎢 on new cases
― Clay, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:39 (four years ago) link
The players will absolutely be the main spreaders. The problem is that once a player or two acquires the infection in any way, the spreading will be very hard to control. The nature of hoops is tailor made for this virus, for the same reasons that one infected person attending a choir practice is able to spread it to a couple dozen fellow choristers.

i think i look at the NBA right now like a lot of america, which has no right answers on how to properly balance the need to make money w/ the need to be extremely safe. and i'm talking about on the player level... i just read davis bertans is giving up $520k by sitting out in orlando. outside of a select group of very very very wealthy players, most of the NBA needs the paychecks just like wait staff at reopened restaurants, and that includes the players on teams not going who are still getting paid out for the end of the season just like everyone else. now obviously even there was a wonderful govt response for average citizens the NBA would still be trying to play bcuz it is the NBA, but if you start weighing the pros and cons of playing on an individual player level, the internal debate is pretty similar to what a lot of ppl are going thru.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 22 June 2020 21:00 (four years ago) link
and i guess players can sit out and still get paid, but there's some equilibrium needed where there are enough players (and enough of the right players) to make holding the event justifiable.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 22 June 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link
the team has the decisionmaking power to pay/not pay a player who decides to sit, right? another interesting calculation in that the wizards, for example, probably don't want to piss davis bertans off over $500k.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 22 June 2020 21:05 (four years ago) link
i feel like i read that players who choose to sit will still get paid but i could be wrong
