just curious - how do you all feel about lowering the hoop for kids? how high up did you have it as a kid? when did you put it to 10'? or was it always that way?

my son has been playing organized hoops since he was 4 or so. the 2-5 league is just for giggles, hoop was 7.5-8' and they played with the mini ball. w few exceptions, you needed kindergarteners on your team or else you had no chance of hitting shots. this made defense v v important, tho kids at that age dont have the abstract idea of "someone else besides the ballhandler might get the ball later and i should not just pay attention to the one with the ball."

he's in the 6-7 league now which is still 7.5-8' but a larger ball. they move up to a 10' hoop in the 8-9 age group.

I feel lagoon never got to experience feeling cool and awesome dunking on a 7 ft hoop

ha they were def around in fact my school often had lowered hoops in da gym just never had one myskelf

i have dunked on the child's rim, it was Good

coincidentally ive been shooting around on an adjustable portable unit that is totally trashed from youths dunking on it

i live in London so.. no basketball close by but my kids do have the classic toy-backboard-hanging-from-a-door setup. i don't know how it's not broken yet.

u need to start a movement for public courts there so yr and all kids can grow up right

For awhile this guy was coming to my open gym who had grown up with Laimbeer. Played little league together. He said he was a good dude, guessed that he adopted the Asshole persona as a coping mechanism for being a target on the court (ie rich white guy) and just went down that rabbit hole.

Laimbeer went to Notre Dame. He's just like every other person I've met that went there.

agree that laettner didnt deserve the hate except that he did choose to play for duke so he kinda did

he went from college superstar to nba role player and didnt seem to mind

he did start to do some drugs about it

laettner was a #3 draft pick, but he was never good enough to justify going that high. if he had insisted on being paid like an nba star he would have ended up playing somewhere in Europe, because he was only suited to be a role player and the league knew that after two or three seasons of trying to elevate him to a star.

I don't like Laetner but he was better than a role player. That 1992 draft class was 2 hall of famers and a handful of regular contributors, including Laetner. Maybe he wouldn't be #3 in a re-do, but he's in the top 5 or 6 in that class. He's just not a player you build a team around.
