there were apparently 9 people on the helicopter and not 5, but other than Kobe and his daughter and Altobelli, no one else has been identified.
i think Kobe was kind of a guy who was the ultimate Laker in the eyes of a lot of fans in that he was the guy who out of all the Laker superstars (several of whom at least were definitely better players) he was the one who had a full career without interruption or who was a Laker the whole time. Kareem arrived after half a dozen years as a superstar in Milwaukee, Shaq was at his peak there but also spent less than half his career in L.A., Magic of course finished 7-8 years before he could have, etc.
― omar little, Sunday, 26 January 2020 23:29 (six years ago)
think its safe to say kobe was the biggest sports star in LA

kobe almost trumpian in that the love/hate hero/villain divide is so stark and it’s hard to figure out what things are gonna be like without him
― Clay, Monday, 27 January 2020 00:02 (six years ago)
He should've done time for Aspen but I'm still pretty fucking gutted by this. It really seemed like he was becoming a better person.

I just read that he, his daughter, AND wife all passed, leaving behind two other children and just...this whole thing can’t possibly be any worse. https://t.co/ZGluqnhDle— 🌻 (@_MissRandi) January 27, 2020

I can understand people not liking Kobe. I can't understand anyone not respecting him. And yeah he seemed to be a better person now than in the past. His love for his daughters and goal of raising "strong independent women" was admirable and touching. RIP to a motherfucking real one.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 27 January 2020 01:57 (six years ago)
he was a blast to root against. we all loved debating his place in the league and the all-time nba. he was a complicated and hugely flawed person who i think had a pretty interesting second act in him, and it's a shame we'll miss it. it's unspeakable for all the families involved. idk. it just feels wrong.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 27 January 2020 02:04 (six years ago)
some people don’t respect him because he probably sexually assaulted somebody. It’s really hard for a lot of people to get past. Sorry.

not trying to bring “real talk” to the thread just responding to gd’s post and I already regret it
seems to be one of those cases that has benefited from happening at the time it did. I've been surprised it never became a common talking point over the past few years with #metoo.
― akm, Monday, 27 January 2020 02:31 (six years ago)
I think he finally transcended that, which is hard to do, and like cad said, he was heading in a good direction. i think he wore his crown well and was a model superstar toward the end

lol, good lead in. i was gonna post this anyway--i keep seeing stuff like this on twitter. as bizarre as his public presentation was he seems to have developed quite a good one-on-one touch with all kinds of people
Kobe & Gigi sat with us at a UConn game in March. He somehow talked to our kids as his basketball equals. Told our 10yo, “Keep getting after it, Thomas.” To our tall daughter: “Posting up is the BEST.” He was a Dad with his lovely daughter on a day out.
