I was at the Sixers-Lakers game last night. First NBA game in person; tons of fun and the Sixers unexpectedly won. When LeBron scored the bucket that passed Kobe, they announced the achievement on the PA and the crowd gave LeBron a huge cheer.

RIP Kobe. You tore my heart out in 2001. Best to his family.

idk what happened but one witness they spoke with heard the low flying helicopter and didn't say it sounded like it was in distress, just flying very low, and then he heard it go right into the hillside. it crashed less than half a mile from the freeway. it's very hilly the spot where it crashed wasn't very high up, so the fog wasn't necessarily a factor, it could have been some kind of engine issue. but obviously since it was so foggy one would imagine it would be relevant to the cause. down here this morning it was vv foggy, low visibility.

Jerry Kocharian was standing outside the Church in the Canyon drinking coffee when he heard a helicopter unusually low struggling overhead. “It [didn’t] sound right and it was real low. I saw it falling and spluttering. But it was hard to make out as It was so foggy,” Kocharian said. The helicopter vanished into a cloud of fog and then there was a boom.

fuck i always worry when i hear abt people who travel all the damn time via pvt planes or copters, i suppose the stats on those crashes aren't necessarily damning so it's probably irrational but idk.

i looked into it a while ago and cars are still way more dangerous than even small planes and helicopters

as a friend said to me the odds of any given helicopter or small plane crash involving a rich and famous person are inflated.

I’ve followed this guy his whole career,certainly more closely than anyone on the site, I’ve been to countless games in person and watched every playoff game .When he was on it was for reals some of the most entertaining hoops you’ll ever see! He could take over a game with style .

there were apparently 9 people on the helicopter and not 5, but other than Kobe and his daughter and Altobelli, no one else has been identified.

i think Kobe was kind of a guy who was the ultimate Laker in the eyes of a lot of fans in that he was the guy who out of all the Laker superstars (several of whom at least were definitely better players) he was the one who had a full career without interruption or who was a Laker the whole time. Kareem arrived after half a dozen years as a superstar in Milwaukee, Shaq was at his peak there but also spent less than half his career in L.A., Magic of course finished 7-8 years before he could have, etc.

I can understand people not liking Kobe. I can't understand anyone not respecting him. And yeah he seemed to be a better person now than in the past. His love for his daughters and goal of raising "strong independent women" was admirable and touching. RIP to a motherfucking real one.

he was a blast to root against. we all loved debating his place in the league and the all-time nba. he was a complicated and hugely flawed person who i think had a pretty interesting second act in him, and it's a shame we'll miss it. it's unspeakable for all the families involved. idk. it just feels wrong.

some people don’t respect him because he probably sexually assaulted somebody. It’s really hard for a lot of people to get past. Sorry.

seems to be one of those cases that has benefited from happening at the time it did. I've been surprised it never became a common talking point over the past few years with #metoo.

I think he finally transcended that, which is hard to do, and like cad said, he was heading in a good direction. i think he wore his crown well and was a model superstar toward the end
