As obnoxious as this guy can be I do respect him for punting his ESPN job because he wouldn’t recant his criticism of Goodell

https://techcrunch.com/2020/02/05/spotify-is-buying-the-ringer-to-boost-its-sports-podcast-content/
ESPN could not have possibly dropped the ball any worse on this. They should’ve dominated the entire podcast market.
Also: RIP to anybody at the Ringer who doesn’t do podcasts.

Looks like they kept the whole staff though

01, 99, 98... they're all p good tbh. would maybe just pick based on guests.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 10 April 2020 20:47 (six years ago)
96 one was fun
― symsymsym, Friday, 10 April 2020 20:53 (six years ago)
okay, the podcasts are pretty good. lol, occasionally you can tell they're just sitting in front of their computers with basketball-reference open b/c they'll quote a partial season stat as if it were actually for the whole season.
i went back and read the michael lewis "no-stats all-star" shane battier article that i think i missed the first time around b/c he mentioned it in the 2001 podcast with lowe. nice little blast from the past, even had hinkie in it when he was still working for the rockets.
― circles, Monday, 13 April 2020 01:37 (six years ago)
it's basically just let's remember some guys for the nba in podcast form and honestly i couldn't ask for anything better.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 13 April 2020 02:15 (six years ago)
ok, so i was watching the 2004 redraftable and two things:
1. Bill picked Anderson Varejao ahead of JR Smith, which is ridiculous. He acknowledged the mistake within minutes, but still.
2. I was reminded of ill-fated SuperSonics pick Robert Swift, which led me to google him to remind myself what he looks like, which led me to this pic:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/Robert_Swift.jpg
And now I need to know who the other guy (#43) is in the pic. I recognize him, but can't place the name.
I didn't know where else to go for help...

― micah, Thursday, 11 June 2020 10:05 (five years ago)

‘this isn’t open mic night’
― mookieproof, Monday, 22 June 2020 22:32 (five years ago)
he's extremely condescending. idk. someone also needs to tell him that hiring famous celebrities to do podcasts does not address structural issues raised by your employees.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 June 2020 02:33 (five years ago)
Varejao over JR is totally fine! If you were gonna pick a dumb simmons draft thing that would be really low on the list
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:02 (five years ago)
JR was considered ultra high risk because he mostly went off in allstar games iirc

he gave his teenage daughter a podcast lol
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:25 (five years ago)
it's unbelievable that he not only uttered that quote in some fashion but that he actually typed it out, presumably had it read over by other ppl, and still sent it out
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:41 (five years ago)
yeah not real swift

i suspect the sports guy, like stephen king, is above being edited
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 07:01 (five years ago)
wtf are you guys talking about?
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 07:50 (five years ago)
Lol. Bill Simmons:- Gave his teenage daughter a podcast - has his son on many podcasts - employs his nephew as a producer - gave two podcasts to a friend whose main personality is “I enjoy eating food” But yeah bro this isn’t open mic night. https://t.co/5r6C7KWLDL pic.twitter.com/Kh3XPHHbww— Joseph 🇺🇦 (@JosephStash) June 22, 2020

Bill's Bernie Sanders impression, which he only does for his republican friends like cousin sal, is also the most open mic night thing ever.

I stopped listening to Simmons’ podcasts when sports ended. I take it I’m not missing much?
― Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 15:16 (five years ago)
i heard hes doing a redraft of every nba draft of recent past which is something i wld be into if i listened to pods

― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 15:22 (five years ago)
I guess now that I’m finished with all of ILX’s Underworld poll playlist I need something else to listen to, so I shall check these “Redraftables” out.

honestly all of his impressions are insanely bad
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 June 2020 16:01 (five years ago)
he is insanely unfunny which is why i struggle every day to understand why he was ever employed to write on a comedy show
― methinks dababy doth bop shit too much (m bison), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 16:40 (five years ago)
i thought he was funny when he first came out not uproarious but amusing times change people grow seasons change
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 17:11 (five years ago)
he is a content faucet. some of that can probably be polished into funny stuff within a writers room. it was also a late night television show, a very low bar for comedy.

Ive long suspected he is literally, not just metaphorically, tone deaf
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 17:57 (five years ago)
can’t imagine Simmons doing an impression at all just bc his vanilla regular speaking voice is so specific and bad
