i agree. it was a good time to be a center but looking back at his peak season stats will remind you that they were totally nuts. i think he would have been a compelling player in the modern game too.

oh i think his lack of passing or outside shooting would fuck him up in the modern game. the man never averaged more than 1.8 APG.

A bit of history for you. The Trail Blazers acquired Moses Malone in the ABA dispersal draft that happened when the NBA and ABA merged. However, the Blazers already had Bill Walton at center and had just acquired Maurice Lucas, too, so they traded Malone away at once for money and a 1st round pick.

The next season (1976-77) the Trail Blazers won the NBA championship, largely on the strength of the players they picked up in the dispersal draft. Nobody missed Moses Malone... until Walton got hurt in 1978, and the Blazers had no decent backup center, and they didn't get back to the Finals for another 13 years.

shit, another case of the blazers not picking someone bc they felt set at that position, when will they learn

well i'm imagining he'd get modern coaching too. he was a more than respectable free throw shooter and i bet he could have done a little more passing.

weird

Proof of the NBA’s dwindling middle class:

We’re almost halfway into the season, and only ONE team (OKC) is on pace for a win total in the 40s. Everyone else is pacing for 50-plus or 38-or-less.

to be fair, the bigs in OKC have been trained to let guards get the rebounds.

Don’t listen to charlatans that say the midrange game is dead. Star players still take them, role players have moved back to give more space.
Also, thresholds on hex plots can be abused to drive a narrative.

its really the long twos thatve fallen off a cliff, down by 50% in that chart, wldve expect the in between game to have increased feels like floaters are a bigger deal now but its pretty stable in those charts

he has the images in reverse chronological order there btw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2020 22:57 (four years ago) link

yeah the long twos are the killer. funny to watch old iverson clips and hes doing step backs and pull ups with his heels basically on the 3p line multiple times per game it seems.
