that's why i think some part of it is about how much resources you have available in a development sense -- where is your coaching, playing time going etc. maybe it's not a coincidence that the heat post-lebron started unearthing multiple useful rotation players from the scrap heap per year
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 04:33 (six years ago)
Plenty of teams draft guys and then send them to the d league and when they get called up they can play. The warriors just whiffed over and over and that’s on the GM
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:35 (six years ago)
heat are still kinda climbing out of the post-big 3 hole xps
― Clay, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:35 (six years ago)
Heat have had some great FA signings but the reasons things are really turning around (seemingly) are Adebayo and Herro
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:50 (six years ago)
the spurs are an exception... they def could've done better but this is mostly the norm
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 04:51 (six years ago)
Waiters and JJ got suspended and are on their way out, Whiteside is gone etc xp
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:51 (six years ago)
Jord Bob Myers has been GM for 7 years and has made one good draft pick. And it was in his first draft! There’s not many teams with a draft track record like that. Even David Kahn picked Bjelica.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:52 (six years ago)
the heat had a nice run of finding quality rotation players from little to nothing incl whiteside, tyler johnson, rodney mcgruder, derrick jones & richardson who was a second round pick... and they "player developed" james johnson, waiters & wayne ellington as vets. it only gets you so far when you don't have the top end talent and that's why they were a roughly .500 team over that period, but my original point is that it's much easier to find diamonds in the rough when you have many more resources to devote to sifting
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 04:56 (six years ago)
kendrick nunn looks like he might be the next guy
Dude the golden state warriors have the resources to scout second rounders. Come on
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:57 (six years ago)
Josh Richardson wasn’t going to be a bust in Oakland because the coaches were busy
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 04:58 (six years ago)
the warriors were built in a very weird way from tanking for barnes, to offloading all that shit for iggy, to the cap spike coinciding w/ KD's free agency. i think it's hard to evaluate how good of a GM bob meyers is in a traditional sense. but we used to argue about whether pat riley is a good GM and i would say that there's different ways to be a good GM aside from just good drafting, so i'm not as willing to hold that against him given that they also won 3 titles.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:00 (six years ago)
the only players taken after jordan bell in the 2017 draft who ended up being better were dwayne bacon and thomas bryant. the best undrafted FA was antonio blakeney. \(o_O)/
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:03 (six years ago)
Dude Monte Morris is wayyyyyyy better than Jordan bell. He’d be the 4th best player on the warriors right now!
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:14 (six years ago)
It looks like Edmond Sumner is going to be good too. And who knows about Cancar. But Jordan Bell most definitely did not work out for the Warriors.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:16 (six years ago)
oh i missed monte down there, he's def better
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:19 (six years ago)
he didn't work out, he also didn't get to develop many skills touching the ball never.5 times per game
The warriors have a motion offense...
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:21 (six years ago)
Nuggets had Monte on a two way where he spent half his time in Sioux Falls and he managed to make it work
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:22 (six years ago)
i mean he didn't seem very skilled, whatever. i'm not really taking up the case of bob meyers. i'm just saying that logically it makes sense to me that franchises doing everything they can to win a title every year for several years are going to be pretty unsuccessful at acquiring and developing young and/or scrap heap talent.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:25 (six years ago)
They went out of their way to spend millions on second rounders, they put the effort in and wanted to make good picks and they didn’t
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:26 (six years ago)
ok yeah but drafting second round picks is really hard
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:29 (six years ago)
He had seven years to find an udfa, hit on one second rounder, one first rounder. And his failure to do so likely led to catastrophic injuries that wrecked the dynasty! Just one Joe Ingles would have changed everything.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:32 (six years ago)
like since drafting capela, the best player young player daryl morey has found is montrezl, who did nothing on the rockets before being traded bcuz there was no playing time. otherwise it's..... danuel house?
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:32 (six years ago)
and if the warriors had joe ingles right now people would maybe expect them to make the playoffs and lose in the first round instead of miss the playoffs altogether, so i'm not sure i'd say it would "change everything" exactly
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:34 (six years ago)
Yeah Danuel House and Trez would be pretty good on the warriors rn
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:36 (six years ago)
They wouldn’t have had to play Durant 40 mpg over 90 games
That nonsense in the playoffs when they basically never sat Durant led to his injury, it seems pretty obvious
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:38 (six years ago)
yeah i don't think danuel house is changing the course of history at any point including the present
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:39 (six years ago)
But Ingles would have.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:40 (six years ago)
When the heat had the triplets + bird man they had a good excuse because Riley literally had an empty roster when they signed them. Myers had 7 years to find one guy.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:41 (six years ago)
But they had no good players, klay and Durant played 40mpg in the playoffs and that was all she wrote
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:42 (six years ago)
i don't think it's that simple. and the way the west shifted this season means that no draft pick or UDFA could bridge the gap between them and the LA teams
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:46 (six years ago)
We all knew Durant was playing too minutes, Kerr kept shrugging off questions about it but we all knew. And then he got hurt.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:49 (six years ago)
One good player would have taken so much pressure off and they win the title most likely.
sure but the calculus that led to that wouldn't change simply due to the presence of one more slightly above average wing player
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:51 (six years ago)
riley really redeemed himself by drafting winslow, richardson, bam, and herro w/ 4 straight picks
Joe Ingles is far far better than any player they had outside of the big 4. It would have made a huge difference.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:52 (six years ago)
Plays Durant’s positions too. It would have been great. James Johnson would have been pretty good too.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:53 (six years ago)
I’m not gonna crown Winslow after one game btw
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:54 (six years ago)
ok but joe ingles was so good that he signed a 4/52 contract two years ago so idk how he would've been able to stay on the warriors
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 05:55 (six years ago)
What are they not paying the luxury tax?
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 05:59 (six years ago)
winslow was fully good last year once he started playing point regularly. and he's been 37%+ from three for 2 years. he's not some prodigy or something but the stanley johnson debate is over and he might be better than myles turner at this point. devin booker def still better but winslow has established himself in that draft class.
i think him and butler are gonna be a really good tandem, watch how many times winslow assists him in this

― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 06:00 (six years ago)
Winslow is a good player and stats probably don’t convey how good he is but I still think they got a role player in the lotto there
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 October 2019 06:04 (six years ago)
Stan Johnson is a pretty amazing bust. The number 3 recruit in high school
def but he could be a really good role player. it wasn't the heist people were saying at the time, but when the year's lottery produces 7 good players and you get one of them i think that's a success unless there's some egregious misstep. maybe you could say passing on booker was one, we know they love kentucky players.
they also have winslow on a good contract fwiw
― J0rdan S., Friday, 25 October 2019 06:07 (six years ago)
xp
stanley johnson will not be a really good role player
Looney was a pretty ok pick! That was a really weird game to watch I had no idea who was who for the game. Gonna be a long season and Kerr is going to have to actually coach. Curry/dray and Dlo/dray pick n rolls all day leave the motion out. Gonna need trill to get back healthy quick like.

still laughing at the announcers praising Westbrook for taking over the game in the 4th as Houston got outscored by 15
