drafting in the late 20s is going to humble just about anyone. though i do think they completely lost their minds this offseason.

i think when you're constantly shedding picks for short term upgrades, picking no 29 every year when you do draft, and giving as many roster spots as possible to over the hill veterans your team is eventually gonna get hollowed out

the celtics got saved by the nets trade but every other title team in recent history looked egregiously worse post-peak

I mean they could have hit on SOMETHING. People make good second round picks all the time

that's why i think some part of it is about how much resources you have available in a development sense -- where is your coaching, playing time going etc. maybe it's not a coincidence that the heat post-lebron started unearthing multiple useful rotation players from the scrap heap per year

Heat have had some great FA signings but the reasons things are really turning around (seemingly) are Adebayo and Herro

Jord Bob Myers has been GM for 7 years and has made one good draft pick. And it was in his first draft! There’s not many teams with a draft track record like that. Even David Kahn picked Bjelica.

the heat had a nice run of finding quality rotation players from little to nothing incl whiteside, tyler johnson, rodney mcgruder, derrick jones & richardson who was a second round pick... and they "player developed" james johnson, waiters & wayne ellington as vets. it only gets you so far when you don't have the top end talent and that's why they were a roughly .500 team over that period, but my original point is that it's much easier to find diamonds in the rough when you have many more resources to devote to sifting
