lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:08 (seven years ago)

kinda interesting that ariza just peaced out after such a successful season

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:09 (seven years ago)

did the rockets actually offer him a contract?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:12 (seven years ago)

idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:15 (seven years ago)

btw the pistons are playing well but whoever assembled that team does not have a high appreciation for defense

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:19 (seven years ago)

ariza was superglue on that rockets team for the past however many years

if drummond had turned into a better defender things would be different but he hasn't been that guy.

my question on ariza was sort of rhetorical but the way i recall that going was that the first reports were him signing with phx for the 15 mil. idk, maybe he really did want to be somewhere else. my best guess is the rockets thought he was about to decline and also thought he was replaceable with a min guy. call me old-fashioned but when you're two quarters away from the finals you go all in to retain the people that were involved in that, especially when the years are short.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:30 (seven years ago)

yup

i feel like porter's skill set is valued enough that they could eventually trade him to a team fancying itself as a contender for a first round pick in the high teens or 20s. kinda like the bojan bogdanovich/jeff green/marcin gortat trades of yesteryear. wall's contract is so insane that i feel like the only teams that would do it would be like... phoenix or sacramento or whatever.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 October 2018 03:58 (seven years ago)

I wonder if John Wall will pick up his $46,872,000 player option for the 2023 season.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:14 (seven years ago)

lmao

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:14 (seven years ago)

porter's been quite good but in that awkward tobias harris zone where he's not worth more than a max contract and thus dangerous to team construction

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:18 (seven years ago)

Rockets bench is a bunch of who-he-play-fors

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:43 (seven years ago)

yeah, porter's good, but not quite good enough to want to spend a quarter of your cap space on him.

$46,872,000

i still can't get used to current cba contracts.

circles, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:45 (seven years ago)

i think it's safe to say the supermax should only be used on a top 5 player.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 04:47 (seven years ago)

its funny the nba thought they concocted a way for teams to keep the best players but really they just make another salary boobytrap

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:20 (seven years ago)

i think porter is not that good, players who cant create at all are just not that valuable, pure 3nd guys are worth closer to the midlevel than the max, IMHO

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:22 (seven years ago)

gotta be able to put the ball on the floor make a pass do stuff

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:23 (seven years ago)

like u can hit a bunch of 3s at a high rate but what happens if the other team decides to guard u

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:24 (seven years ago)

look at all the crazy shit kyle korver does to just get a shot off

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:25 (seven years ago)

plus the number of guys who can hit a 3 these days is basically everyone

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:26 (seven years ago)

there's not very many 50/40/80 guys. he shot over 43% the last two seasons from 3. that's elite. he should be shooting 7 per game. he's never had a good coach, might have something to do with it.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:32 (seven years ago)

yeah my point was that you can't be paying people big contracts that represent their actual value, which is what porter (and wall) has. in order to get enough talent to contend within the limitations of the cap you need to get the guys that are so good that you can't pay them what they're worth because the max prevents it.

or in the rarer Celtics case find lots of guys who will outplay their perceived value in your system or outplay their rookie contracts

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:32 (seven years ago)

it's true. warriors as well, obv.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:33 (seven years ago)

can he create 7 per game tho, can he create 3 good looks in the playoffs idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:34 (seven years ago)

wld a mid level player who shoots 37/43/75 be a better idea, prob

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

*43/37/75

lag∞n, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

yeah warriors are underpaying all 4 of their all stars currently that ends this year though i think?

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)

i guess they could also just take discounts like kd that's the problem with the cap as a competitive balance tool is it assumes the difference between making 20m and 30m matters to everyone when it's actually meaningless in a practical sense

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:43 (seven years ago)

you're wealthy either way why not get your name in the books a few more times

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)

yeah it ends this year. klay and kd are up for re-ups.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:46 (seven years ago)

there's a lot of factors but potentially yes. porter is obv overpaid but he is an elite shooter, I havent watched them enough to know if he just doesnt have the motor to be a 20 ppg player. maybe he just hates playing with wall.

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:48 (seven years ago)

would like to see him on a diff team with a diff coach

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)

Dwight is returning to action tomorrow night :)

it has to be one of the biggest miscalculations in the history of sports collective bargaining.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:03 (seven years ago)

wait wait wait now otto porter is an elite shooter?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:03 (seven years ago)

43% isnt elite?

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:04 (seven years ago)

if those are predominantly standstill catch and shoots then no not really.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:06 (seven years ago)

is otto porter out there taking people off the bounce and hitting stepbacks?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:06 (seven years ago)

*44%

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:07 (seven years ago)

no but that wasnt the criteria xp

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:08 (seven years ago)

joe ingles or even klay dont do that and they are elite shooters. mos tof the guys on that list are catch and shoot guys

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:09 (seven years ago)

i'm thinking i probably don't consider most catch and shoot guys to be elite shooters because the shots the take aren't very hard

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:26 (seven years ago)

hitting them at a high rate is great but idk, i don't exactly fear most of them

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:26 (seven years ago)

cool, cool

Jimmy Butler is taking next step in six-week-long process aimed at getting the All-Star out of Minnesota by sitting tonight against Utah, and could lead to extended absence for Butler, league sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski.

yeah it's perhaps one of the finest examples of unintended consequences

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 31 October 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

not only is it not incentivizing teams to keep their stars but it's actually in some cases incentivizing them to *not* keep them i.e. cousins in sacramento
