garry harris and millsap are the only two good defenders on that squad

it's possible melo is outright cooked... it's also possible he just had a bad year last year. i think this signing could work out esp for the money and given who else they could've gotten.

it could totally work if he's willing to accept the role he needed to accept last season.

like melo is going to look at this roster and say "im the 3rd best player on this team and i need some touches" and its a wrap, theyre winning 10 fewer games than last season

i get why houston does this move though because it's not a financial risk, but it is a huge opportunity cost.

even in the absolute best case, completely different, vastly improved = the player he was when he was drafted minus two summers and one season of development

melo's problem last year was not accepting his role, it's that he couldn't hit a shot to save his life. so he might be cooked! or he might shoot better and look like what OKC thought they were getting.

Even though every graph I've seen says Melo is cooked I can't help but believe that he could way outperform his vet minimum contract by giving 10-15min a night of feasting on the very worst 2nd team defenders around the league and doesn't weasel his way into the crunchtime rotation.

melo was like shockingly bad last season. like shooting threes off the sides of the rim and shit. he could def be out of the league at the end of the season. i'd also rather still rather have him over mbah moute.

I think every game I saw melo play I saw him clang at least one 18-24 foot jumper off the side of the backboard and several possessions where he clearly had an open man literally in line of sight with a clear path to the hoop and did not pass

i just added it up and i think the lakers have 28.3 million dollars coming off the books after this season (with all the 1 year deals like rondo, beasley et al) and then Deng will be in his last year of the terrible deal so possible 18.3 tradeable as a salary dump...all the other decent pieces are still on rookie deals

so i guess i kinda see the method to the madness (assuming they tried and failed to get george this year), though it's ballsy to punt on a year of lebron's career at this age....

but def makes more sense than getting into a bad salary for a less than great player just to say you "got someone"

the amount of guys on one-year or expiring contracts this coming season is staggering.

i'm sure the lakers are confident they can get their guys next summer, but i think a lot of teams feel that way.
