are we gonna ever get a close game in this series?
― 龜, Monday, 21 May 2018 14:11 (six years ago) link
Was wondering the same thing. Can someone with more NBA knowledge than me explain why these games are so lopsided regardless of who wins?
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 21 May 2018 14:29 (six years ago) link
Don't know if I have more NBA knowledge than you but read somewhere that emphasis on 3's makes for more lopsided scorelines and found it pretty convincing.
If a team is hot from 3 point range and their opponent happens not to be, they're essentially getting 50% more value for a larger percentage of their shots and that spirals into blowouts pretty easily.
― tsrobodo, Monday, 21 May 2018 14:41 (six years ago) link
thats true but the average score should still be close so we're just rolling poorly
― ciderpress, Monday, 21 May 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link
my response to Moodles would be that sometimes the GSW just don't feel like blowing you out by 40

average scores won't change but the distribution might be wider. i.e. higher variance
― k3vin k., Monday, 21 May 2018 15:23 (six years ago) link
there is also the GSW-specific factor of turning it on when they feel like it that rip van wanko mentioned lol
def 3s are increasing variance, all 3 eastern conf games have been blowouts too, maybe some other style of play type things are having the same effect too idk
― sprout god (lag∞n), Monday, 21 May 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link
increased pace shd decrease variance for roughly even matched teams, but also if one team is just whipping butt all game then it gives them more opportunity to run up the score
― sprout god (lag∞n), Monday, 21 May 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link
it seems like coaching is becoming more important maybe the game to game tactical counters are a bigger deal than they used to be

yeah i think this has a lot to do with it. lebron modulates constantly too. he basically didn't try in game 1 and then really eased off the gas in game 2 for whatever reason after the first quarter.

― Clay, Monday, 21 May 2018 16:16 (six years ago) link
this is just how the warriors lose in the playoffs. been this way for a few years now. last night didnt really have the feel of a 40 pt blowout but the scrubs were lights out too and just kept adding to it, think quinn cook was perfect from the field.
CP has not been good this series and looks injured.

xpsah yeah higher variance was the phrase I was dancing around but couldn't remember
― tsrobodo, Monday, 21 May 2018 16:32 (six years ago) link
I think chris has looked fine, just has been playing inconsistent. he was arguably the best non-KD player on the floor in game 2. and his defense has been mostly solid, spectacular at times
― k3vin k., Monday, 21 May 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link
he was also slumping pretty hard at the end of the season, he might be running out of gas a little

he's been getting absolutely lit up on defense, and has been kinda lazy. he's masked it with a few good plays here or there (see his klay swat and save last night) but overall hes getting cooked.
― they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Monday, 21 May 2018 19:07 (six years ago) link

I don’t have a team left, but I would take Celtics or Cavs, either one, don’t care. Then rockets, but I’ll hold my nose. Then cancel the playoffs. Then warriors.

That third quarter from steph just...what do you even do when he goes off like that AND it triggers the avalanche
My suspicion was that when it happened both harden and cp3 would make it worse by looking for calls, going into zombie defense mode, etc, and it’s happening

― A is for (Aimless), Monday, 21 May 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link
In the $15 game I take mj and lebron, then Kd and barkley and spend my last dollar on hakeem. I make lebron play point and kd and Charles switch forward spots whenever they want. If I had an extra dollar I’d upgrade to bill Russell but maybe Hakeem is even better now I have a monster four man perimeter defense and Hakeem at the rim

sorry but when you're building a team with a realistic chance to beat a ridiculously unfairly good all-time great team you might have to do it in a way that is not aesthetically pleasing to everyone. they have to squeeze value out of every possible spot because they don't have the luxury of having the warriors absurd roster
― k3vin k., Monday, 21 May 2018 20:44 (six years ago) link
