Harden was realllly bad on defense last night

Sure, as the Rockets have shown, it’s a solid mathematical proposition over the course of a regular season. Letting two of the best isolation players in the NBA chuck up as many step-back threes as they possibly can and hoping the percentages break your way is a fine bet to make on a macro level. It’s a bet that can get you 65 wins and the one seed. The problem is it’s also a bet that leaves you with very little to do in the face of an opponent who so greatly reduces the margin for error. Shoot until your fingers are numb and the nylon is threadbare against the Warriors; they’ll just shoot right back.

i thought this was pretty otm, great 82 game season and all but all it takes is a 4-game dislocation and you're out :)

rockets def all year scanned to me as a good reg season team that isn’t a real playoff threat

Clay, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:51 (eight years ago)

the presence of alltime great team is a pretty big factor in that formulation

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)

i mean the rox are the clear 2nd best team

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)

for sure just feels like I never took them seriously?

Clay, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)

because the warriors exist?

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

kinda a dinosaurs vs asteroid situation

Clay, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

maybe steph will fall down a well

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:55 (eight years ago)

idk, i really like their talent and the defensive additions they made who can also space the floor. and iso scoring has a lot of value in the playoffs. the problem i'm seeing is that they really only play one style and can't shift to a faster, ball-movement offense when playing iso isn't effective. and despite the better defense overall they're very prone to easy mistakes even if they start off strong on a possession.

They're a top four team playoff for sure. That's why they're in the western conference finals. The eastern conference finals aren't as tough to play your way into. I'm pretty sure the Rockets would beat the Cavs and compete pretty well with the Celtics. They just aren't as put-together as GSW.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:57 (eight years ago)

i think the bron/kyrie teams of past could probably take these rockets

, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:58 (eight years ago)

i mean it’s basically what goon was saying: the dubs exist therefore all is folly

Clay, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 17:59 (eight years ago)

2016 cavs vs 2018 rockets would be a fun 2k simulation I would dig

Clay, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:00 (eight years ago)

so scoring has a lot of value in the playoffs (but really shdnt be yr default)

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:01 (eight years ago)

i

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:01 (eight years ago)

right it can't be the only way you play

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:02 (eight years ago)

what happened to 7 seconds or less dantoni? they are so predictable this way. warriors can win playing a handful of different styles and the rockets have the players and tools to do it as well.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:02 (eight years ago)

their two best players won't play that style

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:03 (eight years ago)

yeah thats prob it

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:03 (eight years ago)

kinda a dinosaurs vs asteroid situation

that's called Raptors vs LeBron now

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:04 (eight years ago)

i mean credit to the rockets for finding the best way to mesh two iso-extraordinaire players, a combo everybody was doubting prior to the season

, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:04 (eight years ago)

mostly they did it by staggering minutes tho, which is prob not the ideal solution

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:05 (eight years ago)

crazy thing is that they didnt even use their most lethal play one time last night, the curry/kd pnr.

most lethal play to me is just when they get KD the post on the right block and he just shoots that little twisting fadeaway. it's basically a lay up.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:09 (eight years ago)

yeah the only hope of defending that one is not letting him get to his spot

sprout god (lag∞n), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:12 (eight years ago)

which wld be possible under different circumstances

good coaches play to the strengths of their roster. I don't really buy the argument that iso-ball works in the regular season but not the playoffs -- and I'm not sure increasing variance (by slowing the game down and taking a ton of 3s) is necessarily a bad strategy against a team that, when healthy, is all-time great

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:29 (eight years ago)

did not really feel like the variance was that increased last night

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:32 (eight years ago)

the rockets only shot four more 3s

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:32 (eight years ago)

just think you've got to mix it up. altho it seemed every time they tried something else last night it ended in a turnover.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:34 (eight years ago)

ariza foul trouble really messed with their rotation last night. surprised dantoni tried out Nene. R Anderson probably wont see another minute in this series either.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:36 (eight years ago)

i do also wonder if there's something to the idea of rhythm when it comes to off ball shooters, and how that's effected by an increase in isolation play by ball handlers. i guess we'll see what the shooting percentages of tucker/ariza/gordon etc look like at the end of the series

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:37 (eight years ago)

yeah i agree ariza foul trouble throws a wrench to the analysis of last night xp

they don't really have experience doing anything else in the reg season so this isn't surprising.

this is the reason kerr only uses isos and pnr when they have to. keeps the other players engaged on both ends.

yeah true. we're probably just overreacting to game 1. that method got them a ton of dominant wins and the 1 seed. i think the rox will win game 2 pretty handily.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:40 (eight years ago)

re: variance, it's tough to play slow when you're the far inferior defensive team and expect to have good results. a good way to increase variance would be to replace chris paul 2s with 3s from other shooters.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:42 (eight years ago)

good lord KD looked unstoppable at times last night. Murderer's row from midrange.

Joe Gargan (dandydonweiner), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:45 (eight years ago)

CP took 7 3s last night

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:47 (eight years ago)

thought Klay was really effective on him, always has been

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:47 (eight years ago)

kevon looney's D was... really good

, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:50 (eight years ago)

really? i didn't think he was doing much.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:51 (eight years ago)

never left his feet

i also like how it seems all NBA players have learned to jump around a 3 shooter to avoid fouling them on the contest

, Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:51 (eight years ago)

yeah looney was really solid, got blown by a couple times but so did everyone else. he's prob the best big they have against the pnr (outside of dray)

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:52 (eight years ago)

nothing worse than the pervasive flopping that goes on by players who bomb fadeaway threes and somehow must hit the floor on a touch foul

Joe Gargan (dandydonweiner), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:54 (eight years ago)

think we discussed on here but one reason (some) players do it is to allow for a softer landing on your feet if you feel someone is encroaching your landing zone. avoids the ankle sprains. it does get extreme tho yea

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Tuesday, 15 May 2018 18:56 (eight years ago)

Pj Tucker and Luc combined 0-9 last night. luc looked like he was playing to avoid re-injuring his shoulder, hes prob unplayable in this series if that's the case.
