2018 NBA Awards Predix & MVPoll

Think Harden has this wrapped but if Brow stays hot like this and they wrap like the 3rd seed he could make a case. Curry has a long shot if he turns it up just a hair more and they re-take the one seed, think harden would have to regress a bit and/or get injured tho too. Dont think any of the others have a real chance at this point and curry/brow is more of a long shot.

i def have heard a lot of buzz around embiid for dpoy, seems early but whatcha gonna do he's a dang beast

I voted Harden MVP. He's been a bridesmaid several times now and set himself up to win this time. Brow ought to pick up a few votes from Harden haters. LeBron will get his votes from his devotees, but... (shrug) nah.

seeing lots of parallels between the michell ROY push and derrick rose's MVP tbh

there's this guy who's clearly the superior player on both offense and defense, but let's vote for the inefficient high volume scorer on a dominant defensive team

wuut mitchell has been absolutely amazing the leading scorer on a team thats won like 30 of 34 or something its crazy, wldnt be surprised if simmons wins tho as philly has gone on a run of their own w embiid out and he obvs has the higher ceiling, theyve both had in some ways unpresidented seasons, in most years what tatums done wld be enough to win it and no ones even talking abt him, fwiw its morally and logically correct to dock simmons points for red shirting

simmons has prob caught up to how he wld be playing if he played last year at this point

it’s true mitchell has been the leading scorer on a really good team whose biggest strength is their defense, this was essentially the argument for d rose iirc — but simmons has just clearly been better. I’m not a huge fan of the “imagine if these two players switched teams” voting tactic because so much of production is situation dependent, but I mean if these two switched teams I think it’s pretty clear that the sixers would suffer more

pretty much all the stats suggest mitchell is a...nice 21 year old player while simmons is a legit star btw

i'd prob vote simmons but that's an undersell of mitchell. if he gets to the line a bit more and gets a little more accurate from 3 he's going to be as good at scoring as any guard in the nba outside the top 4 or so.

in general and in conjunction with the point I was making about jokic in the reg season thread earlier we are just not very great at using the eye test to weight different basketball skills in assessing a players overall value, players who get buckets are always going to be overvalued and people who do little things and play defense are always going to be relatively undervalued. I think the eye test happens to support simmons anyway and the stats suggest it's not close but things like he's the leading scorer on a good team that sound so intuitively right are hard to people to shake loose

mitchell def has the potential to be a star, tho tbh simmons is already there and his ceiling seems to be MVP candidate and in the not too distant future, anyway the discussion is about this year and simmons is the better player

creating shots is the single most valuable nba skill u need to put those old musty nerd opinions in storage

I agree it's important but being better at it does not mean the player is necessarily better, hence my point about weighting and how we are bad at it

hitting home runs is the best thing a baseball player can do but it does not necessarily mean that the guy who hits the most home runs is the best player or even the best hitter, makes u think

none of this is to say mitchell hasn't had a sick year, he has, but simmons is way better and we should give the award to the better dude imo

i agree that hes been better and will prob win but i think mitchell has been great and also i think simmons shd be disqualified for redshirting

lowe’s love of raw plus-minus stats but not adjusted plus-minus stats bugs me tho lol

most of these awards are dumb but COY seems the dumbest behind MIP

My defense of a lebron vote would be solely that he is still great and it would be a make up award for some previous years

I wouldn’t actually vote for him though with harden existing this year

Having to completely remake lebrons custom built team around him midstream is also a serious strike against any real mvp candidacy too as lowe goes into extensively

he def wasn't the worst, he's about average over 82 games a this point probably tho def very good when he dials it in

dialed it in for prob 10mins this season the rest he took off he was really exceptionally bad, its not a coincidence the cavs were also insanely bad
