listening to the Kyrie episode of JJ Redick's podcast and kyrie is a weirdo. anyway in a snippet of it JJ said the rim on one side of the court (at the England arena) was crooked. 76ers shot well in the first half and Boston in the 2nd half. idk thought that was interesting

Spottie, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link

the minn broadcast team is good like everyone says. i actually learn stuff from those guys.

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:04 (six years ago) link

yeah i like them. i like the pdx team as well.

Spottie, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:19 (six years ago) link

So my top pods are:

listen to every one p much
Lowe Post
Woj Pod
House of Strauss – New pod with Ethan Strauss and his wife Allie (some hoops but kind of all over the place)
JJ Redick
bill simmons when he has hoops talk
warriors plus/minus with tim kawakami and marcus thompson

listen to some but not all
The Ringer NBA show — with Network and those peeps
Talk Hoops with Zach Harper
Basketball Friends — Haberstroh and other people
Open Floor: SI's NBA Show — Ben Golliver & Andrew Sharp
The Hoop Collective — all kind of espn writers
RealGM Radio — Danny Leroux pod

Spottie, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:36 (six years ago) link

i love the TBF guys. THC is a pretty pale imitation at this point.

lag∞n, Friday, 12 January 2018 23:09 (six years ago) link

i love the basketball jones/the starters weekly pod, but I could understand if it is way too silly for some. Road trippin is occasionally entertaining. The Ringer's NBA pods should be much better than they are. Give Shea Serrano a podcast, simmons!

while my dirk gently weeps (symsymsym), Saturday, 13 January 2018 04:50 (six years ago) link

I fully admit to watching the starters daily nba tv show most days please do not ban me

Clay, Saturday, 13 January 2018 05:13 (six years ago) link

lol those guys are living the life props to them for turning hoops fandom into a career. havent really listened to them since the TBJ days, I follow them all on twitter tho.

i can only (sporadically) get into the tv show around all-star game and playoffs, but yeah they are inspirations

while my dirk gently weeps (symsymsym), Saturday, 13 January 2018 05:56 (six years ago) link

I mostly like the constant dunking on leigh ellis and his constant Dad ways

Spottie, Tuesday, 16 January 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

my fav hoops pod rn is brian windhorst's espn pod w/ the other espn basketball ppl. it's basically the old truehoop podcast but w/ all good/smart writers and no "personalities" like amin or the more talk radio-ish guys that used to be on the truehoop pods. windhorst is kind of a garbage writer but as a moderator of conversation he's good bcuz he is very very knowledgeable about the league.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 March 2019 20:18 (five years ago) link

i listen to it cause brian is good but i actually hate the combinations of guests who rarely seem to have any chemistry. other than bontemps whose grumpiness i enjoy they can be a drag.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 17 March 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link

it's a little worse now bcuz jackie macmullan is out... sometimes it's a weird crew. kirk goldsberry in partic is not very good.

that nate jones guy on twitter was pretty vociferously saying that latter scenario will happen. who knows if he's right but what he's saying makes sense logically

I think Amazon cuts a deal with Turner to continue to produce the show for them. https://t.co/Ur9dP6c3w0

— Nate Jones (@JonesOnTheNBA) May 22, 2024

Zaz still has to pay for operations to produce Turner NHL, MLB, and NCAA studio shows, so it makes sense to draw a profit from Amazon for something they will continue doing anyway (producing sports studio shows). Amazon pays talent salaries and production fees + profit to Turner. https://t.co/3Kab6q4bro

— Nate Jones (@JonesOnTheNBA) May 22, 2024

Inside the NBA is not NBC’s style at all, and NBC takes pride in producing their own sports shows. Amazon is more likely to farm out production. However, I could see Inside being more of a fit on Peacock. NBC has done less serious sports programming on there (Kevin Hart + Snoop) https://t.co/u6OtgMRuxv

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 21:16 (four days ago) link

makes sense but seems unlikely just in the sense that ive never seen an arrangement like that, at least not for something as big as the nba, if companies are shelling out billions for a sport theyre prob ready to just roll their own shows too, guess you never know with amazon not being a tv network but they do still produce a ton of stuff

my three-part plan to fix the NBA:

well he's not the only one who has posited the idea that NBC or amazon could contract turner to produce the show

espn just contracted out college football games to turner, which has never broadcast college football before, this stuff is all getting really incestuous

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5513081/2024/05/22/college-football-playoff-tnt-sports/

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 21:34 (four days ago) link

The TNT games will be produced by ESPN and use ESPN broadcasters, but be branded TNT Sports, according to a source with direct knowledge of their plans. TNT could produce ancillary programming around the games, which could include a new show like, “Inside the College Football Playoff.” ESPN will get to choose the first two first-round games before TNT gets to make its selection.

ESPN, WBD Sports and Fox are teaming up for a stand-alone streaming product, named Venu, which will be available to consumers this fall and, according to executives briefed on the plans, will be priced in the $45-$50 per month range.

By working with Warner Bros. Discovery, ESPN is able to keep the entire playoff under the Venu umbrella.

nate jones is probably off wrt to the amazon aspect of it all. but it's extremely easy to read this and envision inside the nba produced by turner on "Venu" attached to espn's nba games

non-nba and non-sports people are different categories. i don't think anyone will be asking him to do political roundtables anymore. but he almost left turner on his own to go announce LIV golf, both espn and NBC are pretty heavily invested in golf. espn will clearly just throw any big personality on TV to talk about every sport these days, stephen a has been doing stuff on first take like talking about football games that never actually happened, saying that a wide receiver who retired two years ago needed to step up etc and the fans of that stuff don't seem to care

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:04 (four days ago) link

It would kill me to see him yelling at Stephen A every day, yuck. That seems beneath him. Golf or WNBA or college basketball would be cool.

I think making his own thing is probably the best path... or getting the gang back together somehow. I certainly don't see him moving to LA or Connecticut to work on site at ESPN.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:33 (four days ago) link

i don’t mean to say he’ll literally end up on first take, i don’t think that would happen. i’m just saying that the ESPN apparatus is very welcoming to big personalities who command attention from the audience whether they know what they’re talking about or not

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 May 2024 22:40 (four days ago) link

ESPN would have him out there for the biggest SEC football games of the year, because he’s an auburn guy, regardless of whether he has a single informed or intelligent thing to say about i.e. georgia vs alabama
