2017 NBA OFFSEASON

idk that collection of contracts could go blazers pretty quickly.

the blazers' real problem is that they're in the west instead of the east

idk spending a quarter of a billio dollars on turner, leonard, crabbe, harkless and ezili over a couple of days is kind of a problem if you're on the damn moon much less this side of the mississippi

it's not ideal but the cap space has to go somewhere, and there will always be middle class teams in the nba. the problem is that middle class in the nba is fighting for the 7th/8th seed in the west, whereas in the east it might be a comfortable playoff birth, which a lot of teams would take!

cap space is one thing but once they get into that repeater tax the panic can set in for management

the blazers problem is that in a salary cap league you have to be able to change your team without wrecking it. when you're loaded up with unappealing players and/or unappealing contracts and all ppl talk about is how you might have to trade your 2nd-best player to change your team, that's a problem. if the heat have a real shot at a star in the near future but can't get anyone interested in taking on waiters/johnson/olynyk they're going to have the same problem.

another problem is that being stuck in that 7th-8th spot in the west year after year is just abt the worst place you can be in the league. no chance of winning more than one or two playoff games per annum coupled with no real chance of improving through the draft (unless you're san antonio). throw in half the team being toxic assets and being in tax territory keeping FA search as a pipe dream and idk it's a garbage position. mortgaged half a decade on evan turner and allen crabbe!

the blazers had a really tough path to navigate when they developed non-complimentary backcourt talent and no frontcourt talent of note. a lot of people miscalculated the cap situation going into last summer but olshey (who i like) might have been the worst offender.

it would have been interesting to see someone like morey run the blazers 2 years ago because in retrospect they should have made a very weird/aggressive/unexpected move

if nurkic stays healthy they could be better than a 7/8 seed this year. everyone on the team should be better minus turner

i think mostly everything they did was defensible aside from turner, which was truly inexplicable. crabbe's contract is insane but he at least presents an identifiable and valuable skill, they just got caught in the wrong year with him.

they had to match brooklyn on turner tbf

iirc the turner thing was mostly that mgmt was shocked when parsons spurned them and they panic-spent on the next 3 on their big board

the heat got caught in the same pickle with tyler johnson, who i really like. i understand why teams didn't want to lose young players they liked bcuz of some weird cap year. but maybe it will come back to fuck them.

71/4 is a ridic amt of money for hardaway jr and is borderline insane in this market

i like hardaway as a bench guy but there was no way he was getting paid an acceptable salary this summer

the nets mission to fuck over all other teams via RFAs is an underrated story of this and last offseason

nets also have a great op to fuck around and develop young players. no one will blame marks even if they totally suck for another three years

yeah not much of a market for one year of him tho i guess + they needed to clear cap for gordo

they were going to have to move a guard eventually but the cap reduction forced them to do it now. getting a forward made the most sense, that said i'm not a big fan of either morris.

i like the other morris he plays bigger, c's r still hopeless rebounding wise

jae's play dipped last year and he didn't look great in the playoffs, he's still seen as a valuable asset right now given the contract and w/ hayward, tatum & brown he could be the odd guy out there

i think they still plan to trade crowder and get a big, there's no way they go into the season again with as little rebounding as last year is there? that lost them a lot of games

they prob need to keep crowder around just in case brown/tatum aren't fully ready but if they trust them for the playoffs they should prob flip him

I didn't like this at first but I think they want brown to play a lot at the 2, and keep smart in the mix, with Hayward eating most all the 3 minutes they had too many guards. So I guess crowder will be m/l a full time 4? That's a pretty small lineup with terrible rebounding tho. Maybe one of the stashed dudes from last year is going to be a front court fixture I dunno. I'm not super worried but I did love how Avery turned into a reliable scorer on top of being a monster defender. Good for svg
