yea. sucks, griffin was a good gm imo

marcos, Monday, 19 June 2017 23:28 (nine years ago)

griffin is interesting. find it hard to completely evaluate his abilities given that lebron fell in his lap. being the GM of a lebron team is a specifically unique job in a lot of ways... for instance we have basically zero idea if griffin can draft and develop young talent.

his trade history is not bad. the mozgov trade didn't kill them, and he bet on JR when his value was in the toilet, which was obv a bet that paid off big. otoh, giving shumper that contract doesn't look pretty, and he got strongarmed in the tristan thompson negotiations (but again maybe that was a specific lebron thing). channing frye was a p good trade too.

ultimately he seems like a decent to pretty good GM who will get treated like one of the best in the NBA cuz lebron turned in some of the most superhuman performances of all time to win them a title.

Sources: As David Griffin departs as Cavs -- "Just couldn't agree on future," source says - Chauncey Billups expected to emerge as candidate

Spottie, Monday, 19 June 2017 23:40 (nine years ago)

No 2 ways about it: Dan Gilbert screwed over David Griffin. Could have let him go to ATL, ORL, or MIL if he wouldn't pay him. Now too late.

— Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA) June 19, 2017

Spottie, Monday, 19 June 2017 23:41 (nine years ago)

no 2 ways about it, dan gilbert is a dick

marcos, Monday, 19 June 2017 23:45 (nine years ago)

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:03 (nine years ago)

drama

Per source familiar w/ breakdown, Griffin removed himself from consideration when it became clear his vision for CLE didn't match Gilbert's

— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) June 19, 2017

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:27 (nine years ago)

gilbert's vision is the banana boat

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:28 (nine years ago)

[praying for further drama]

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:31 (nine years ago)

i just want more trades than last year's meager crop

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:44 (nine years ago)

dan gilbert got rich off other people's mortgages of course he's a snake

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 00:49 (nine years ago)

ah yes thats the stuff

Dan Gilbert didn't consult with LeBron James prior to parting with David Griffin, sources said. James had advocated for Griffin extension

Source: LeBron is "disappointed" at Griffin's departure, as well as the timing, & "concerned" abt what this portends for Cavs going forward.

— Howard Beck (@HowardBeck) June 20, 2017

lol

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:48 (nine years ago)

marcos, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:55 (nine years ago)

Understandable

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:58 (nine years ago)

wow insanity

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:10 (nine years ago)

FYI: Several teams have spoken to #Cavs about Kyrie Irving. Griffin was unwilling to move Kyrie. It's unclear where owner Dan Gilbert stands

— Sam Amico (@AmicoHoops) June 20, 2017

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:14 (nine years ago)

Yessss the cavs delivered the drama just a week after we hoped

christ

marcos, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:15 (nine years ago)

kyrie is on a very good contract otoh i don't see why he should be untradeable

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:17 (nine years ago)

not untradable but hard to imagine a realistic return that fits the cavs better. idk maybe i haven't thought long enough about kyrie trades.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:36 (nine years ago)

what if you're trading him for jimmy butler

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:38 (nine years ago)

based on following the story and what every connected writer is saying, griff leaving is probably much more about compensation than anything else.

guy has a spotless reputation in the league afaict, and doesn't seem like he would be afraid of taking a year off. he'll find a better situation down the road.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:39 (nine years ago)

i find kyrie to be especially interesting bcuz the perception of him as a player is fairly static in the regular season, if even a bit negative relative to other top players

but then people seem to put a lot of stock into what he does in the finals, which i understand... it certainly should make us think about him differently. it's just hard for me to reconcile those two things.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:40 (nine years ago)

kyrie for butler doesn't thrill me unless there's some other move for love, the cavs need his scoring imo.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:41 (nine years ago)

he's a super flawed player but he does some things in the playoffs that are almost impossible to replace.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:42 (nine years ago)

i wonder if there's something specific about kyrie that makes him a good pairing with lebron in the playoffs? i guess the game slows down and his 1 on 1 abilities are magnified?

bcuz otherwise across his career his teams have been consistently and thoroughly outscored when any 4 other people not named lebron james are on the court with him

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:43 (nine years ago)

i guess the most pertinent question for the cavs is how valuable kyrie is against the warriors specifically. i could totally understand the argument that he's an indispensable piece, but also the cavs do need to improve their team somehow, and he is probably their best trade asset (who isn't lebron)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 02:44 (nine years ago)

If no one appreciated you Griff I did, and hopefully all the people of Cleveland! Thanks for what u did for the team for 3 yrs! We got us 1🏆

😋

k3vin k., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 03:43 (nine years ago)

Draftexpress updated to have the Spurs taking Jeanne 59th which is fascinating

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 03:57 (nine years ago)

Before the Marfan diagnosis I thought he was a top 10 talent and still think he would have gone lotto

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 03:58 (nine years ago)

wtf

LeBron reached out to me during last labor negotiations. You would have been very good NFL tight end. You are one of top 3 in NBA history

— John Clayton (@ClaytonESPN) June 20, 2017

lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 04:01 (nine years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 June 2017 04:04 (nine years ago)
