one of the worst ever def and most of the best guys went in the teens which is weird

lag∞n, Monday, 23 May 2016 00:40 (ten years ago)

Yeah weirdly I was just looking at that draft the other day

If you did it again it probably goes Giannis- Gobert- Adams now? Then maybe oladipo...maybe Noel..then basically just light the ping pong balls on fire after that

Oh McCollum, he'd probably go over oladipo

posted this in the race thread but i figure ILHers will be interested in the topic

k3vin k., Tuesday, 24 May 2016 15:50 (ten years ago)

good read.

Spottie, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:25 (ten years ago)

Amin El Hassan (who tbf is quoted) would've been the perfect guy to write that article. Wilbon expounds his bias whilst having nothing interesting to say about where it comes from or what it means.

I mean, the guy uses a sample size of Shaun Livingston and Draymond Green to rule out the possibility that young black people might use or talk about analytics which is complete bullshit.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:06 (ten years ago)

amin's a decent analyst but he's not really like a...writer

someone like greg howard maybe

k3vin k., Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:32 (ten years ago)

It’s like calculating points per 100 possessions, a very popular go-to stat in NBA circles. Why is that more important than points per 48 minutes, which is the actual time in which an NBA game is played?

this reads like a Mitch Albom column

frogbs, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:39 (ten years ago)

points per 36 is the best

Spottie, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:42 (ten years ago)

or any per 36 minute stats

Spottie, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:42 (ten years ago)

xps

Amin may not be a writerly writer but he's a black man that has made a career out of analytics in a way that Wilbon and Howard haven't. I'd be a lot more interested in his take on things given his career path and experiences.

I mean it's clear from the quotes that he's thought about it quite a fair bit.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:48 (ten years ago)

xp per 36 numbers can make players on good teams that play garbage time look like gods.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:49 (ten years ago)

It is really strange to see so much of the old guard refer to advanced metrics as an organizational philosophy like "smallball" or "don't give up the big inning", its like figure out what it is before you write 2000 words on it

(and yes, I know that wasn't the point of the article)

frogbs, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)

literally wilbon' main thing on pti at this point is that he hates analytics and millennials are bad. I can't take any of this seriously as an engaged racial analysis because I flatly dismiss the guy as an angry crank.

Clay, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 17:59 (ten years ago)

I heard Amin about five times on lowes pod before I realized he was black, I think I assumed he was middle eastern maybe? Either way I don't think I ever specifically heard him touch on race for any reason so I didn't really think about it. P sure the clip of him clowning doc rivers gm decisions (the "did you grow up playing ball in my driveway, welcome to the clippers" one) was the first time he wasn't just a disembodied phone voice

gis for westbrook shark jump (agent hibachi), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 18:06 (ten years ago)

he's on The Jump pretty often now.

Yeah this is always weird to me, analytics is supposed to be about finding new ways to tell you things that *are happening* in the game that might be hard to see, then use that information to figure out *what to do*

Having a stance against analytics now is like having a stance against watching game tape, some dudes 1970 probably thought it was too fancy and just got up more practice shots but duh it's just a tool

gis for westbrook shark jump (agent hibachi), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 18:09 (ten years ago)

Heh the best part of that Wilbon article is that he handwaves away the "tiny handful" of black people in pro sports using analytics in the opening paragraph so that his point stands

I mean, just take that on head-on: it probably is white-dominated. How many are there? Is it a bigger or smaller percentage than other layers of non player positions in sports? Is it worse than there only being one black owner in the league? Is it actually trending up or down?

If I'm gonna lean as hard into anecdata as he does I don't think I've heard an actual verbal conversation among random fans of any color centered on any advanced stats outside of a few baseball heads who get into whip when arguing about pitchers or w/e, do all races hate analytics?

gis for westbrook shark jump (agent hibachi), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 18:20 (ten years ago)

in an election year I don't hear a lot of people discussing analytics and polls plus endorsement models for who'll win Ohio, they talk about their emotions re: the candidates. and yet I have a feeling that sam wong will be closer to right about who's gonna win than my neighbor who thinks trump is "a good guy."

some great quotes by Bomani on the Wilbon article here:

http://deadspin.com/espn-finds-new-way-to-have-inane-debate-over-sports-ana-1778745587

The analytics thing that is largely generational. There’s another issue that I think comes up that black people are generally steered away from mathematics. Math and science related fields, people of color and women, and people of color not including Asians in this discussion, but people of color and women are typically pushed away from those directions. I’ve taken a lot of high-level math, where you look around and are like, “Damn, it’s just me.” Like that’s the game. That’s what the game’s been for a very, very, very long time, so I could imagine that there are black people that aren’t necessarily so inclined to lean on these advanced numbers because nobody has ever been so inclined to lean these advanced numbers back upon us. I can see it like that.
