scoring on a 1-4 fastbreak is more valuable than consistently hitting open threes because open threes tend to get rare come the offs

yes if there is anything late game russell westbrook has taught us over the past 5 years it's that he can be counted on to make the right decision in 1 on 4 situations

well luckily most of the game isnt the late game

westbrook played better than kawhi last night ergo is better than kawhi

i mean obvs russ is very flawed but hes also consistently taking one of the alltime great Ds out of their comfort zone, its not unrelated that okc are a great offensive rebounding team

kawhi is great but hes a lil bit overrated due to the nba efficiency fallacy

if he really is the 2nd best player in the league spurs shd be winning this easily

i do think we can rebury the notion that kawhi has passed or caught up to KD

the thing about westbrook is that he has distinct flaws that can be very harmful to his team but like the way he played last year when KD was out was superhuman transcendent

naw kawhi is a top 10 player and maybe top 5 but not top 2. he's also the youngest player in the top 10 though....

in a more structured system aka "when durant is healthy and okc must play like a normal basketball team" he's much more problematic and perhaps less useful than "we need you to put up 35/10/10 every game" & so i could see how one might prefer kawhi but i'm not sure that necessarily makes kwahi... "better"

was Duncan good earlier this season, I can't remember. for the rare athlete who can stay productive past 32-33 yrs old, when it finally goes (always by 39 or 40) it goes like *overnight*

i like how defense is so enigmatic that the only way these advanced stats can get at it is calculating the player's overall impact on the game and then subtracting their offense

the dark secret of basketball is that its actually impossible to completely untangle a player from their team/scheme statically or otherwise, those nu defensive metrics are only at the outer edge of unreliability

which is p cool imo i like stats being useful but not definative

i mean like obvs duncan was not actually one of the best defensive players in the league this year, but was he put in a position to succeed, def

the regressed plus/minus stats actually have more predictive power than i expected, i'd like to look at just instances of consecutive years where a player switched teams though and see how much that goes down

i proposed in one of these threads that all players shd be forced to switch teams every year in order to make stats better

we'd also find out which coaches are actually good im in favor of this

it shd be a law def, all players randomly assigned teams at the beginning of each season

Realistically, tonight will be the last game of the blazers' season, but I am hoping they can string it out long enough for one more game in Portland. All that would be required is good active defense, some hot shooting from Aminu & Crabbe to relieve pressure on Lillard and McCollum, and some better than average offensive rebounding. I give them a 15% chance of a win, but hey, it's a chance!

I can't put my finger on why and kd was better last night but right from the outset I really felt like Westbrook was just *in control* of that game, in some kind of quasi mystical bullshit first take sense, right from the first few possessions

Kawhi tried to wrestle it away and made some astonishing plays but lma didn't really step it up, maybe gassed from scoring so much the first couple games
