i have something to say about the offs THE 2016 NBA PLAYOFFS

i think something else i consider when rooting for or against a team is the answer to the question does this city really NEED them to win like will they really appreciate it? i admit it is a very corny thing to do and every city has at least some die-hard loyal fans who would appreciate winning. but like when lebron went to miami i remember thinking "the fuck do you people care about winning an nba championship??? you are miami!!" it is part of the reason i find it fun to hate the lakers and why i have no problem rooting against golden state, like what does san francisco/bay area need a championship for? it also why i find it hard to hate a team like detroit even though i want the cavs to wipe them out this first round. it is also why i like the spurs, even though they have already won so many championships i just know that in san antonio they really appreciate that team

dubs have an extremely good hardcore fanbase that suffered through a lot of not great basketball and i salute their sucess

dubs having the association w oakland while being named "golden state" and experiencing a region wide bandwagon wave and planning on moving to sf is an interesting study in identity

the bay is kinda funny for the strength of its intra regional grudges, like ppl dont even acknowledge that sf is obvs the city at the center of the metro region lol

like even brooklyn or cambridge partisans arent gonna deny the primacy of manhattan and boston

In a way it's already happened. There are so many VC/tech types at games now. The crowds are different than the crowds five or ten years ago, at a lot of them are not Raiders/Athletics fans. Five years ago you didn't hear much talk about basketball in San Francisco or the peninsula.

the saturation coverage of steph curry does get tedious, like ok cool yes he did a crossover and hit a three, he does that most games, why can't we admire kemba walker for a day? tho curry has stimulated a ton of new interest in the nba and i now have a whole cadre of friends/acquaintances who never used to watch bball but now excitedly tune in to the dubs

because kemba walker is doing things that about 100 other point guards in NBA history have done while steph is doing things no player has done before. if you want coverage of local stars, read local papers and websites
