i think something else i consider when rooting for or against a team is the answer to the question does this city really NEED them to win like will they really appreciate it? i admit it is a very corny thing to do and every city has at least some die-hard loyal fans who would appreciate winning. but like when lebron went to miami i remember thinking "the fuck do you people care about winning an nba championship??? you are miami!!" it is part of the reason i find it fun to hate the lakers and why i have no problem rooting against golden state, like what does san francisco/bay area need a championship for? it also why i find it hard to hate a team like detroit even though i want the cavs to wipe them out this first round. it is also why i like the spurs, even though they have already won so many championships i just know that in san antonio they really appreciate that team

"like what does san francisco/bay area need a championship for?"
oakland tho, very different. also different sport you know? almost like me rooting against the Cavs cos of Ohio State

dubs have an extremely good hardcore fanbase that suffered through a lot of not great basketball and i salute their sucess
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:28 (ten years ago)
yea true
also in addition to it being very corny it is also based on like a one half of a cursory thought about a given cities' basketball fans so idk

dubs having the association w oakland while being named "golden state" and experiencing a region wide bandwagon wave and planning on moving to sf is an interesting study in identity
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:33 (ten years ago)
yea will be interesting when they move to sf
― marcos, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:34 (ten years ago)
pretty sad about it tbh
― Better Pau Gasol (Spottie), Monday, 18 April 2016 20:36 (ten years ago)
the bay is kinda funny for the strength of its intra regional grudges, like ppl dont even acknowledge that sf is obvs the city at the center of the metro region lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:37 (ten years ago)
like even brooklyn or cambridge partisans arent gonna deny the primacy of manhattan and boston
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)
if the dubs dont ditch golden state and put the city back on their jerseys upon moving contract them imo
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:43 (ten years ago)
the bay warriorsthe city warriors
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:44 (ten years ago)
like u cant claim the whole state theres 4 other teams
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:45 (ten years ago)
official name the bay warriors, have the city on the home jerseys, ditch the copperplate IMHO FREE BRAND CONSULTATION
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:47 (ten years ago)
tho obvs theres some tension between the city and the bay but let it tense i say
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 20:48 (ten years ago)
In a way it's already happened. There are so many VC/tech types at games now. The crowds are different than the crowds five or ten years ago, at a lot of them are not Raiders/Athletics fans. Five years ago you didn't hear much talk about basketball in San Francisco or the peninsula.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:00 (ten years ago)
it'll be stupid when they move to sf, fuck sf
― lute bro (brimstead), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:03 (ten years ago)
the saturation coverage of steph curry does get tedious, like ok cool yes he did a crossover and hit a three, he does that most games, why can't we admire kemba walker for a day? tho curry has stimulated a ton of new interest in the nba and i now have a whole cadre of friends/acquaintances who never used to watch bball but now excitedly tune in to the dubs
― micah, Monday, 18 April 2016 21:45 (ten years ago)
It's not even the biggest city by population in the Bay Area.
― Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Monday, 18 April 2016 21:53 (ten years ago)
i anticipated this spurious argument and wld like to submit into evidence "brooklyn has more ppl than manhattan"
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 21:56 (ten years ago)
― micah, Monday, April 18, 2016 5:45 PM (25 minutes ago)
because kemba walker is doing things that about 100 other point guards in NBA history have done while steph is doing things no player has done before. if you want coverage of local stars, read local papers and websites
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:12 (ten years ago)
thanks for the tip m8
― micah, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:16 (ten years ago)
fun fact: magic johnson got more press than buck williams back in the day
― balls, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:25 (ten years ago)
there's so much fucking basketball content nowadays
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:26 (ten years ago)
i know so much about kemba walker and i've barely watched him play this year
lol
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:26 (ten years ago)
The Unbreakable Kemba Walker.
― Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Monday, 18 April 2016 22:27 (ten years ago)
who's the most unknown star? like my dad doesn't follow hoops and knows who boogie cousins is, that's not the case in 1988. who's the buck williams or mitch richmond or whoever of today?
― balls, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:29 (ten years ago)
the guy with the highest value-to-name recognition ratio is probably millsap!
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:31 (ten years ago)
kyle lowry?
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:31 (ten years ago)
i follow basketball and wasn't aware of quite how good his stats were until very recently
lowry's a solid pick too but he played for the knicks so i'd bet more people probably know him than millsap
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:32 (ten years ago)
kyle lowry did not play for the knicks
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)
wait yes he did *looks up*
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:33 (ten years ago)
huh wait who am i thinking of lol
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:34 (ten years ago)
not that i necessarily disagree w/ you tho i don't think any casual fan knows one more than the other
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:34 (ten years ago)
who was the dude the knicks got for like half a season a few years ago
lowry seems plausible though he's gotten voted into ththe all star game. "a hawk" is plausible though man are we really as obscure as the nets were in the 80s or the kings were pre-webber?
― balls, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:34 (ten years ago)
are you talking about bargnani
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:35 (ten years ago)
lowry was gonna go to the knicks http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/dolan-blocks-knicks-deal-raptors-lowry-article-1.1546553
tfw trade rumors become real memories
lowery and milsap good picks, favors emergent
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:35 (ten years ago)
lol no
maybe lowry was rumored to be close to being traded to NY a few years ago or something
xp yep
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:36 (ten years ago)
kevin is such a messy bitch that he rewrites players' careers
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:37 (ten years ago)
love the trade drama
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:37 (ten years ago)
jj red dick on his podcast was talking about the trade deadline w/ lowry iirc about that near trade and trade deadline in general, that podcast is genuinely interesting w/ the right guest, dudes are definitely more open and casual.
― balls, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:39 (ten years ago)
draymond was fun on simmons podcast also, dude reminded me ALOT of barkley
― balls, Monday, 18 April 2016 22:40 (ten years ago)
According to several reports, the Knicks were prepared to trade Raymond Felton and Metta World Peace plus Iman Shumpert or Tim Hardaway Jr. or a 2018 first-round pick. The Raptors preferred the first-round pick, but Dolan — who negotiated the Carmelo Anthony trade with Raptors GM Masai Ujiri when Ujiri was with the Denver Nuggets — got cold feet about trading a future asset. That could open the door for the Brooklyn Nets to acquire Lowry instead.
hah of course dolan vetos a home run trade

― Better Pau Gasol (Spottie), Monday, 18 April 2016 22:42 (ten years ago)
knicks will never be good as long as dolan owns the team, irrefutable fact
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 April 2016 22:42 (ten years ago)
lol xp
