― lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 19:39 (ten years ago)

― k3vin k., Wednesday, 17 February 2016 20:26 (ten years ago)
The Ringer will be "the exclusive home to all of Simmons' written material," according to his spokesman, while HBO will be his home on TV.
doesnt seem like theres an actual show yet
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 20:30 (ten years ago)
was gonna say this should be called the stinger but realized basically any rhyming word is a better name
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 20:31 (ten years ago)
yeah show is this summer. the ringer is not a great name.
― balls, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 21:01 (ten years ago)

The Ringer is Medium's first premium site, cooooool
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 16:22 (ten years ago)
huh i wonder if that means medium is funding it or theres another entity involved and theyre just using mediums platform
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 16:45 (ten years ago)

lol this guy
Bill Simmons: I’m glad you mentioned that. You know why I can’t have Brian Windhorst on? Because ESPN won’t let anyone from ESPN come on my podcast, which is fine, but it’s just laying down the ground rules for what is going to unfold over the next few years. It could have been friendly, and it’s not going to be friendly.
Joe House: It’s already unfriendly.
BS: It’s going to be more unfriendly.
JH: I’m excited to see how unfriendly it can get.
BS: Just wait until the Ringer hires a public editor for ESPN, that writes for the Ringer. That’s going to get very unfriendly.

takes a scenario when ESPN are the clear dickheads and effortless makes himself the dickhead.
― Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 11 March 2016 20:06 (ten years ago)

― balls, Friday, 1 April 2016 14:38 (ten years ago)

― johnny crunch, Monday, 16 May 2016 01:43 (ten years ago)
it was beyond terrible
― bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Monday, 16 May 2016 02:35 (ten years ago)

― Spottie, Monday, 16 May 2016 02:54 (ten years ago)
it's really insanely incredibly absurdly bad
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2016 17:00 (ten years ago)

― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:13 (ten years ago)
he's one of those guys where it's awkward when they swear, always seems so forced and cool guy'ish
― Spottie, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:15 (ten years ago)
def better to avoid cursing in a written monologue
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:17 (ten years ago)
i still can't get over the fact that they snuck "i believe soup is the perfect food" in there
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2016 17:21 (ten years ago)
a bold declaration of total banality
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:22 (ten years ago)
didnt even have to look to know that drew magary wrote the deadspin post on this

haha didn't even notice this the first couple times. so dumb
― Spottie, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:40 (ten years ago)
this promo prompts me to imagine simmons saying "I like soup" in the voice of ralph wiggum
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 16 May 2016 17:48 (ten years ago)
like, i get it when there's really nothing left for him to do other than have a tv show but he's so bad on camera
― call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:53 (ten years ago)
he cld still be an extremely popular writer but he doesnt want to i guess
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:54 (ten years ago)
which i mean sure who wldnt rather be on tv but like if thats not really what youre good at
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:55 (ten years ago)
but on the other hand hbo seems to have no problem carrying cheap studio sports shows that no one watches for years so its prob perfect for him
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)
yeah of course he's just overambitious and is reaching further with this venture, like his new site will cover topics he's totally out of his depth on like tech and politics and he needs to conquer a new medium so he has to get a show, idk maybe it will all be popular enough but this promo didn't even have the production values of the grantland nba previews with jalen.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:57 (ten years ago)
his destiny is prob as a podcaster
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:58 (ten years ago)
definitely his best medium
― call all destroyer, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:59 (ten years ago)
like grantland was unprofitable and eventually his new backers will get sick of him/of losing money, no ones gonna watch his nbo show, he doesnt want to write, but his podcasts are wildly popular, theres money in pods/theyre extremely cheap to produce
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 18:00 (ten years ago)
I believe soup is the new internet
― Clay, Monday, 16 May 2016 20:06 (ten years ago)
i think he'll have to write to keep the ringer's traffic afloat in the short term but maybe he will be stretched too thin
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2016 23:18 (ten years ago)
reminds me of this gem

― verhexen, Monday, 16 May 2016 23:47 (ten years ago)
kind of liked the promo *shrugs*
fwiw, haven't listened to the podcast in weeks.
― Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:26 (ten years ago)
why does everybody keep assuming the ringer needs to generate profit? honestly, that should be the least of their concerns for the foreseeable future. the entire point of vc is to grow your market (or audience).
― Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:27 (ten years ago)
they're still hiring like drunken sailors so i tend to agree.
i've been off the pod mostly due to the non-sports guests but the one he did with travon free was great, that guy is pretty engaging.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:43 (ten years ago)
bill simmons has exactly nothing to do with vc
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:44 (ten years ago)
the ringer is raising vc
― Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:49 (ten years ago)
point is a high end vanity project has no chance to be profitable ever in todays media environment
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:51 (ten years ago)
tho who knows maybe theyll be more willing to engage in content farming than grantland was
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:52 (ten years ago)
simmons seemed extremely opposed to that sort of thing, he thought if he cld just hire as many writers he liked that of course ppl wld want to read it
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:54 (ten years ago)
