i like the column today though it's not really a picks column. more like another season preview with picks wedged in somewhere. i would like to know why barnwell thinks the redskins are gonna cover +3.5 against the dolphins!!

grats, well deserved and so forth
podcasts are coming back starting 10/1!
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Friday, 25 September 2015 00:20 (ten years ago)
i've been listening to a lot of pods at the gym so i'm amped for this
― call all destroyer, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:22 (ten years ago)
maybe this should go on grantland thread but jalen and jacoby are getting a daily espn radio show
― balls, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:26 (ten years ago)
i can't say i've ever listened, any good?
― usic ally (k3vin k.), Friday, 25 September 2015 00:27 (ten years ago)
it's an enjoyable enough podcast. i don't know how it'll work on radio, there's a half assed aspect to the pod that i can't imagine they'll replicate on radio.
― balls, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:41 (ten years ago)
Jalen and Jacoby are pretty good especially when they dig into jalens stories or have fun news to break down. The off the dome aspect is actually kind of fun usually but they can get a little aimless occasionally and I'm a little tired of jalens catchphrases but maybe a daily structure will inject some extra life. Would definitely listen to them on radio over most other boring ass sports host doods
Also the story of Jalen jacking Patrick Ewing's TV is all-time

Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 14h14 hours agoRandom things I'm excited about starting next month, vol. 24: finally being able to go on Mike Francesa's show. This will be yuuuuuuge.

Not so much happy to see him fail as constantly frustrated that he's the kind of person that gets put in a position to do so.

i only care about zach lowe
― Spottie, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)
lowe will be fine, i hope he goes w/ simmons cuz i like his podcast, like him providing contrast w/ simmons, and most importantly like him not hidden behind insider (i have insider, it's just the principle of the thing). i see lowe's grantland stuff pop up w/ the normal espn stuff in the feed or whatever in the nba section which i don't think i do w/ the other sports writing at grantland. barnwell would leave as soon as simmons called, i'd hope mays would go w/ him cuz i enjoy that podcast and mays goes a long way in making barnwell tolerable on the pod. apparently whatever site he's setting up will still cover pop culture which idk, morris was the only dude there i really thought was very good (as opposed to adequate, like what you'd find at vulture or something) and he's gone to the times. simmons seems like a great boss but if i was a sports writer i could see debating whether you'd want to potentially burn a bridge w/ espn, which probably is the pinnacle for yr profession. whereas w/ lambert or pappademas or whoever on the pop cult side there's no incentive to stay, espn will probably slowly shut grantland down over the course of the next year or year and a half so either you take a job elsewhere now or later.
― balls, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:29 (ten years ago)
yeah as long as lowe keeps doing his podcasts i'm happy, though i do love his pods with simmons
― k3vin k., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:37 (ten years ago)
his podcast w/ windhorst was good
― J0rdan S., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:38 (ten years ago)
if anything happens to grantland all the sports people will just be folded into main espn, it's the pop culture people who might get boxed out
― J0rdan S., Monday, 12 October 2015 22:39 (ten years ago)
maybe it is more complicated getting the headliner sports dudes because of espn but based on the ppl i have seen so far you could believe they're doing something pop culture focus, no/fringe sports
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:42 (ten years ago)
this is mean and unfair i know but i always giggle a little at how windhorst always sounds winded on podcasts
― balls, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)
simmons is supposed to be on francesa's show on weds
― mookieproof, Monday, 12 October 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)

He totally doesn't know how to back away from his phone or mic while the other person is talking so he always sounds like a horror villain lurking over someone's shoulder and breathing heavily

lol @ simmons impersonation of mike coldcalling him when dog left and opening w/ "how much money do ya make?"

brutal, and whitlock deserves every last fucking word of it and then some more
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:24 (ten years ago)
i remember first hearing of whitlock on a killer mike song, actually. "that's life II," off pl3dge, where he's like "we not listenin to that sellout shit that jason whitlock writin'"
― slothroprhymes, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:26 (ten years ago)
he was always on that sellout respectability politics angle but feels like it's taken a marked turn for the worse of late. also i know in his mind that motherfucker thinks he inherited ralph wiley's mantle/mission/whatever, he's basically said that he sees himself as having stepped into those shoes, and holy shit does that disgust me, like there probably isn't a sportswriter working that i wouldn't scoff at the claim by but man it sure as fuck isn't jason whitlock
― balls, Friday, 16 October 2015 03:04 (ten years ago)

so weird, just a couple of weeks ago they said it was doing better than ever
― balls, Friday, 30 October 2015 18:17 (ten years ago)
gonna reckon they killed it out of spite due to last month's mass exodus (like 6 people left at once, iirc) and then a handful of others filed out in the following weeks. apparently those who were will there will be paid for their remaining contracts

i don't think this is gonna do much to solve those revenue problems
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 October 2015 18:35 (ten years ago)
yeah i just think it may be symptomatic, they've been doing a lot of penny pinching in various places. i think it's part of why they've let a lot of big name talent split and then filled holes w/ ppl already on payroll.
― balls, Friday, 30 October 2015 18:39 (ten years ago)
@BillSimmonsI loved everyone I worked with at G and loved what we built. Watching good/kind/talented people get treated so callously = simply appalling.
