Sure. However, the costs are insignificant. Moreover, they are spread across groups.

also no one knows how many impressions/views/etc hes producing across all the platforms

They (Grantland, podcasts, and television) are very estimable.

idk man i dont think its a coincidence that most ppl dont get simmons type money or their own fiefdoms and espn were fine with letting him walk, i mean how many of those views were simmons views and how many were espn views

I'm calling it now: Bill Simmons, first Editor In Chief of Snapchat.

Sure. A lot of people are underpaid. ESPN ad revenues were $3.9 billion in 2014. Money wasn’t the issue.

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 8 May 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

i agree that ultimately its small change to them but there does seem to be some dynamic of them rolling out the red carpet for him and he still wldnt be a team player, and obvs from a marxist perspective everyone at espn is prob underpaid

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 17:23 (eleven years ago)

but from a capitalist perspective i kinda doubt he was

Fair. (And everyone is underpaid except John Skipper. He makes $5 million per year and an addition $10-15 million in stock!)

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 8 May 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

but from a capitalist perspective i kinda doubt he was

Really? You think he’ll make less than $3 million in his next position?

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 8 May 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

naw hell prob make the same or more from some thirsty startfucking company, still doesnt make it good business, like has katie courics contract paid off for yahoo prob not

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

—“Ding Dong the witch is dead.” (That’s how one ESPN staffer describes the vibe in Bristol.)

lol if espn thinks that bill simmons out of all their personalities is the fuckin wicked witch there's...quite a lot wrong with that network

ya it is clearly a post apocalyptic hellscape

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 17:30 (eleven years ago)

was gonna say genius seems a good fit, let's see

“audience participation” otherwise known as “touching” (forksclovetofu), Friday, 8 May 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

man i blinked and missed rap genius exploding, i knew they broadened to like lyrics in general or w/e but i had no idea they were doing sports and shit thats kinda scary

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:24 (eleven years ago)

trying to reach escape velocity from the seo wasteland

ESPN brass showing a surprising degree of confidence that @BillSimmons isn't going to proceed to tell the world every one of their secrets.

best possible outcome is a 50k word multipart tell all hit piece

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:45 (eleven years ago)

spread over 500 genius annotations of course

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:45 (eleven years ago)

this is almost certainly going to happen

frogbs, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:48 (eleven years ago)

can't wait

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:49 (eleven years ago)

i'd say deadspin would kill to host that but it won't matter b/c they'll just cut up various simmdog revelations into multiple kinja posts and shit them out at staggered intervals throughout the day for optimum #views

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:51 (eleven years ago)

hes got to have signed a non disclosure but maybe doesnt gaf

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:51 (eleven years ago)

will prob just talk abt it on the pod then i will have to beg ilh posters to tell me what he said

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:52 (eleven years ago)

burns me up how pods r where all the good gossip is

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:53 (eleven years ago)

he doesn't have dgaf money as much as i would love for him to just destroy espn

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:54 (eleven years ago)

kimmel could prob float him some safety net cash on the d/l if he wants to go on an anti-ESPN blitzkrieg

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:55 (eleven years ago)

wld be a reasonable enough calculation that its not worth it for espn to sue him, tho obvs itd hurt his future employment prospects

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:56 (eleven years ago)

how much is dgaf money he def has way more than it wld take for me to not gaf lol

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:57 (eleven years ago)

rather than a huge hit piece hell prob just be taking weird passive agressive shots at them til the end of time

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 18:59 (eleven years ago)

idk $3m/year for the past five years doesn't seem like "i could definitely survive getting sued by the walt disney corp" money

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:03 (eleven years ago)

pass/agg shots much more his style

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:04 (eleven years ago)

the no way sna of sports personalities

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:08 (eleven years ago)

i have a theory that grantland will be much better now simmons has gone, sorta like when the knicks lost patrick ewing

noiiiiice

frogbs, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:15 (eleven years ago)

the majority of the Grantland staff swear by Simmons and hold him responsible for the creative freedom and large salaries that have.

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:21 (eleven years ago)

well yea, i mean something tells me disney/espn suits were not the impetus behind wesley morris earning 6 figures to write about movies

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:25 (eleven years ago)

(which, knowing a handful of paid movie critics, i can say is pretty high for someone w/o ebertesque syndication!)

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:26 (eleven years ago)

yeah if i had to guess grantland is prob fd

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:27 (eleven years ago)

then again, the SI piece makes a good point saying that they'll prob run it as long as absolutely possible just to prove that they don't need simmons's #name and #brand

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:29 (eleven years ago)

or close it/ruin it out of spite/disinterest

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:31 (eleven years ago)

feel like if its true they want a more buzzfeedy site than thats prob what theyll do

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:33 (eleven years ago)

countdown to zach lowe getting rolled into insider

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:34 (eleven years ago)

yeah the speculation i've seen (and the skipper quote seems to confirm) is that in the short term at least they'll continue it out of spite to 'prove' that bill simmons had nothing to do w/ grantland's success

balls, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:34 (eleven years ago)

is grantland successful tho

lag∞n, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:35 (eleven years ago)

i mean its successful enough, it prob gets slightly more/about the same viewers as deadspin

slothroprhymes, Friday, 8 May 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)
