uh the clippers are FIVE HUNDRED PLUS games below .500 as a franchise. If they repeated this season over and over again they'd hit .500 in 2030.

also a lot of credit should go to the players, i haven't seen the nbpa press conference but i guess roger mason basically said all the playoff teams were gonna boycott if silver didn't come out like this

LeBron's response(s) to all this has made me realize I've gone from actively disliking him to really liking him. Lebron is not a horrible person!

The thing that disturbs me most about the tape is that Sterling mainly seems to be upset because others in his circle were giving him grief for his mistress associating with black people. I assume this circle is nothing but rich white guys. Who are still alive and still in power and still racist as fuck. Barf.

Right, they were shitty as fuck most of the time and he was notoriously cheap with them. All the more reason I feel like this would make an entertaining story.

this will be an interesting, likely public, fight. sterling: "clippers not for sale."

that's right. but i'm sure he said it knowing the possibility existed that silver would try to force him out.

clearly not much love lost between sterling and the rest of the owners, not so much as a single hes a good guy but... in the run up to this

Would really like to read a good longform piece on his tenure with the Clips now. Seems like that will probably happen.

This is pretty old and I don't remember if I've ever read it but: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1018960/1/index.htm?eref=sircrc

it doesn't matter. Silver has supermajority of owners. The by-laws are clear. He's gone.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:26 (ten years ago) link

forbes article has an interesting perspective on sterling's likely reactions.

Sterling has yet to respond but people who are sure that he now must sell, take his $750 million profit and go (he bought the team in 1981 for $13 million, reportedly assuming $11 million in obligations, paying $2 million in cash), don’t know Donald.

Insiders say he had to be talked out of attending Sunday’s loss to the Warriors in Oakland and doesn’t comprehend his predicament. A source told me he called Coach Doc Rivers to explain, but Rivers refused to discuss the matter.

We’re not talking about everyday denial. This is someone who can tell his girlfriend, V. Stiviano—that’s what she was actually called—who describes herself as “black and Mexican,” not to “broadcast” a photo she took with Magic Johnson or bring African-Americans to Clipper games … where she often sat next to Sterling in the seat that would be otherwise occupied by Shelly Sterling.

Sterling has great tolerance for chaos — he seems to revel in it. Alexandra Castro, the young woman he sued in 2004 when he acknowledged paying for sex, portraying her as a $500-a-night prostitute, is still often a guest at Clipper games.

“Donald’s not wired to let all this in,” said a former staffer. “I’ll bet he’s preparing to sue the league for devaluing his franchise. The thing he’s mad about is that nobody is using the T in his name.”

Sterling, born Donald Tokowitz, the son of a pushcart peddler in hardscrabble Boyle Heights, is now Donald Tokowitz Sterling. I lampooned him in open letters for 20 years in the Los Angeles Times and the only thing he ever complained about, aside from telling me, “I didn’t understand what you meant,” was the first one when I left out the T.

Not that Sterling doesn’t have some defenders, or at least one. Noted Donald Trump, who presumably knows whereof he speaks: “He got set up by a very, very bad girlfriend. Let’s face it. She’s the girlfriend from Hell.”

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:29 (ten years ago) link

i think the r-skins thing is actually worse since it's embedded into the culture of the NFL so deeply that it's more difficult to dislodge. sterling said horrible things but the NBA just straightaway booted him. the NFL has all their whining about tradition and "it's a difficult issue".

I mean let's face it

Dominique, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

The by-laws are clear. He's gone

Sterling might conceivably cook up a suit to challenge the legality of the NBA owners' agreement and seek a stay on the basis of 'irreparable harm' if he's forced to sell. If he succeeds in dragging this into court, he could hang onto the franchise for years. Otherwise, he's out of there as soon as the owners can vote on it.

Aimless, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

sounds like he's contemplating a lawsuit to allege the nba is driving down the current market value of his franchise. theoretically, that's a potentially viable claim that he might be able to bring outside of the nba's constitution.

Since it's a voluntary association he entered into and a contract he knowingly signed, unless he comes up with a novel argument that a judge found interesting for broader reasons, I agree. But I do expect him to try and lord knows a clever lawyer can tie things up in knots once a lawsuit is in play.

not sure, at all, i agree with the notion that a lawsuit for diminished franchise value would be so easily and quickly dismissed. it might, but it's a very complicated analysis, to some extent turning on language in instruments that aren't publicly available.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:00 (ten years ago) link

bomani jones otm, but still, now some people ARE paying more attention to all the other stuff Donald Sterling did because of this, and also, I think this incident stuck much more because of his past. Like if some other owner had just made isolated racist statements IDK if the NBA would be forcing him to sell.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

the spin that right-wingers are putting on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's comments about this is really disgusting to me.

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:09 (ten years ago) link

I feel like I'm not even sure I want to know what spin that is.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:24 (ten years ago) link

But now I am hearing the harsh imagined sound of "KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR" as intoned by Sean Hannity ringing out over and over again.

the substantive angry parts, but also the "you can sleep with black men, just don't pictures of yourself with them on Instagram" clowning because I have been nonstop marveling at that since this story broke

have been v busy today and couldn't check in but this is deeply cool and just.

honestly proud of adam silver. in the like 20+ years I've been following the league I've become conditioned to assume the right thing being done about a given situation was an extreme rarity. the new regime is ostensibly offering hope here. and that's cool.

Clay, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:42 (ten years ago) link

let's remember this is the right thing being done solely for bottom-line reasons

textbook Morbs here but gotta call bullshit due to the "solely" in there. I have no doubt that many NBA people, from Silver to other owners to dudes who parks players' cars, were for real appalled by Sterling's audio.
