i think the r-skins thing is actually worse since it's embedded into the culture of the NFL so deeply that it's more difficult to dislodge. sterling said horrible things but the NBA just straightaway booted him. the NFL has all their whining about tradition and "it's a difficult issue".

honestly all the credit in the world to silver and the league (love that mark cuban is already toeing the line) but this would have been a hell of a lot more interesting if the comments came from one of their 40 year old venture capitalist owners rather than one of their 80 year old got in on the ground floor owners.

the more in the national public eye they are for non sports fans the more likely it changes

40-year-old VC dudes who think this stuff are a lot less likely to say it as openly and in as uncouched terms as he did, even in private.

silver should have walked off the podium doing the sam cassell dance

Zach Lowe ‏@ZachLowe_NBA 28m
League sources say Silver/league, not Sterling, would control Clips sales process in event Silver gets the required 3/4 vote to force it.

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA 35m
Bottom line: There isn't a franchise that could withstand public backlash of failing to vote w/ Adam Silver on Donald Sterling's ouster.

Arash Markazi ‏@ArashMarkazi 26m
Clippers won't be issuing a statement from Donald Sterling. "He's not a part of the team anymore."

So many owners are coming out echoing Cuban's "100% suppport" for Silver's decision; I can't see any of them choosing to stand in the way of forcing Sterling to sell if only for the backlash they'd get.

uh the clippers are FIVE HUNDRED PLUS games below .500 as a franchise. If they repeated this season over and over again they'd hit .500 in 2030.

The thing that disturbs me most about the tape is that Sterling mainly seems to be upset because others in his circle were giving him grief for his mistress associating with black people. I assume this circle is nothing but rich white guys. Who are still alive and still in power and still racist as fuck. Barf.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:26 (ten years ago) link

forbes article has an interesting perspective on sterling's likely reactions.

Sterling has yet to respond but people who are sure that he now must sell, take his $750 million profit and go (he bought the team in 1981 for $13 million, reportedly assuming $11 million in obligations, paying $2 million in cash), don’t know Donald.

Insiders say he had to be talked out of attending Sunday’s loss to the Warriors in Oakland and doesn’t comprehend his predicament. A source told me he called Coach Doc Rivers to explain, but Rivers refused to discuss the matter.

We’re not talking about everyday denial. This is someone who can tell his girlfriend, V. Stiviano—that’s what she was actually called—who describes herself as “black and Mexican,” not to “broadcast” a photo she took with Magic Johnson or bring African-Americans to Clipper games … where she often sat next to Sterling in the seat that would be otherwise occupied by Shelly Sterling.

Sterling has great tolerance for chaos — he seems to revel in it. Alexandra Castro, the young woman he sued in 2004 when he acknowledged paying for sex, portraying her as a $500-a-night prostitute, is still often a guest at Clipper games.

“Donald’s not wired to let all this in,” said a former staffer. “I’ll bet he’s preparing to sue the league for devaluing his franchise. The thing he’s mad about is that nobody is using the T in his name.”

Sterling, born Donald Tokowitz, the son of a pushcart peddler in hardscrabble Boyle Heights, is now Donald Tokowitz Sterling. I lampooned him in open letters for 20 years in the Los Angeles Times and the only thing he ever complained about, aside from telling me, “I didn’t understand what you meant,” was the first one when I left out the T.

Not that Sterling doesn’t have some defenders, or at least one. Noted Donald Trump, who presumably knows whereof he speaks: “He got set up by a very, very bad girlfriend. Let’s face it. She’s the girlfriend from Hell.”

I mean let's face it

Dominique, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

The by-laws are clear. He's gone

Sterling might conceivably cook up a suit to challenge the legality of the NBA owners' agreement and seek a stay on the basis of 'irreparable harm' if he's forced to sell. If he succeeds in dragging this into court, he could hang onto the franchise for years. Otherwise, he's out of there as soon as the owners can vote on it.

Aimless, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:32 (ten years ago) link

sounds like he's contemplating a lawsuit to allege the nba is driving down the current market value of his franchise. theoretically, that's a potentially viable claim that he might be able to bring outside of the nba's constitution.
