Technically, James is coming at Ilgauskas' request, but the process of picking the game revolved around James' schedule and was orchestrated by the Cavs.

During the free agency pitch meetings in Cleveland that summer, the Cavs came to the table in James' downtown offices with a custom-made cartoon that featured a bunch of fart jokes and characters that mocked other teams in the league. The Cavs knew James' personality well, including his love of low-brow humor. They played to it, and James roared with laughter and there were smiles all around. It was fun.

what does president of basketball operations do exactly

riley's job.

assembling roster; running draft; managing cap.

maybe he figures if they give him total control he can turn it around and be a hero to nyc

oh yeah well that's a dumb thing for phil to do for the knicks since it is basically not a job anyone could reasonably do in the next 5 years or so

the knicks are obvs epically fucked from a cap etc standpoint but they do have a built in advantage for attracting free agents which isnt nothing

his role would prob be close to that of team president a la riley or bird, yeah. but those guys can mold the front office the way they want.

riley makes most (all?) basketball decisions and works closely with a cap guy

bird meanwhile hired a nominal GM but prob still has input on basketball decisions

Phil never struck me as the guy to bring in on a rebuilding project. Not much patience with young players. Having him as the architect of a major overhaul seems dumb.

assume knicks sign phil and keep carmelo. what do they do, with who is available and their cap space, over the next three years? not sure who constitutes the pieces they could get to build around anthony.

but that flexibility comes along with basically having no players
