"Sometimes in timeouts I'll say, 'I've got nothing for you. What do you want me to do? We just turned it over six times. Everybody's holding the ball. What else do you want me to do here? Figure it out,' " Popovich said, according to the San Antonio Express-News, not long before the Spurs used 14 3-pointers and a season-high 39 assists to dispatch the Cavs. "And I'll get up and walk away. Because it's true. There's nothing else I can do for them. I can give them some bulls---, and act like I'm a coach or something, but it's on them."

that simmons rant about the sixers was totally insane btw
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 15:13 (twelve years ago)
he kept refuting his point -- no one in boston really cared that the celtics tanked for duncan, or durant, or that they ended up getting KG and ray -- but apparently the sixers fans are going through some torturous process because their team is tanking to become obviously better extremely soon?
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 15:15 (twelve years ago)
also his entire obsession with young players "learning" from veterans is kind of bizarre and overstated, like why would you assume that a surly danny granger who just got kicked out of the franchise he was once a face of for the the worst team in the NBA would be willing to mentor michael carter williams?
he basis his entire point about MCW on what happened with antione walker during his rookie season without making even the slightest acknowledgment that maybe antione walker was just an especially "special" player who was going to squander his talent regardless of what "bad habits" he picked up in the final months of his rookie year. antoine walker probably isn't the precedent for any and every rookie!
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 March 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)
Since the All-Star break, the Warriors have the NBA's 2nd ranked defense and 24th ranked offense.

antoine walker probably isn't the precedent for any and every rookie!
antoine walker: "everyone should hope i am the precedent for any and every rookie!"
everyone else: "oy, let's hope antoine isn't the precedent for any and every rookie."

that entire simmons column was completely insane
especially the last third that transformed from his worry about mc-w into a anti-stern/pro-silver screed
and basically the whole thing is of a piece with every spring's "what do we do about tanking?!?!" media freakout that lasts a month then the season ends and no one cares
― z-time champion (agent hibachi), Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:12 (twelve years ago)
i think simmons and others are acting like the tanking this year is unprecedented and a problem that must be addressed cuz they're hoping they can actually spin silver into doing something. simmons is right about bottoming out and selling long rebuild as a means of keeping yr job (though is this what philly is doing? unless they fuck up picks they should be decent/in the playoff hunt in like two seasons right?)(and it's hardly worse than mortage yr future/make stupid signings so you can squeeze into a 7/8 seed and point at that as progress right?) but the whole point of a draft is maintaining or achieving parity and there isn't a reform short of going back to the pre-lottery method (in which case the tanking would be way beyond what we've seen so far this year) that isn't gonna have a negative effect on parity. barkley's suggestion is the only one i've seen that i could imagine being adopted though there is something very appealing about the wheel. also am i crazy or did he not even mention (or at least emphasize) that boston's tanking for duncan didn't even work? anyhow, and i say this as a hawks fan, personally there isn't a huge difference in entertainment value between watching an awful team w/ a couple (or one even) possible young brightspots and some hope of a good draft and watching a mediocre team that might make the playoffs or might pick twelfth in the draft or might not even do that cuz they traded a pick or picks for some guy you're never gonna win a title with as yr best player, if anything w/ the awful team at least you can score cheap tickets easy.
― balls, Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:48 (twelve years ago)
From the pov of the league, tanking is not a problem per se. It only becomes a problem only if it drags down revenue across the league.
― Aimless, Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:59 (twelve years ago)
Does he only care about tanking now cos the Celtics are involved cos....
― Spottie, Thursday, 6 March 2014 21:19 (twelve years ago)
