i don't read much grantland other than simmons or lowe but lowe could really do without the footnotes anyway, actually he should basically stick to x's and o's i basically hate every opinion he has

its designed to cram as much stuff as possible in there w any concern for the reading experience or visual hierarchy or anything, and it does look very specifically dated for sure

"content everywhere" is such a bad design but I guess the intent is to get the most clicks-on-page so whatever works I guess

wonder if grantland wasnt doing as well as espn wouldve liked and they forced this design on them cause iirc simmons explained a lil bit of the original design and he seemed to understand re user experience and readability, which i think most writers do

but even if youre determined to cram all the clicks in there this is just really poor execution, like look at buzzfeed they have tons of shit everywhere but its way more user friendly than this

A perfect example of this was after Game 3 of the San Antonio/Memphis series in the NBA Playoffs this year. On the postgame show, when discussing the crowd’s reaction when Memphis got behind in the game, Simmons tied in the 1968 assassination of MLK in the city. Basically, he said that because of the tragic events 45 years ago in their city, the crowd just knew something bad was happening, and it caused them to go quiet. If you read his writing, you’ll notice dozens of these theories that he throws out there, trying to position himself as some next-level thinker.
