i sort of feel like ware's injury is graphic and public enough and that he plays for a big enough school that the bills will get taken care of
it does make you shudder to think if that would be the case had this happened in a DII or DIII game
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 April 2013 00:46 (thirteen years ago)
yeah for sure, but it still highlights the gross inequity of this system
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 April 2013 00:47 (thirteen years ago)
Good lord Louisville's defense is smothering.
They dismantled Syracuse (at Syracuse) with the same strategy, and if the refs are calling a loose game then I don't see how anyone can play with these guys unless.
I really don't like all the hand checking and handsy defense by Louisville.

louisville is the highest-revenue hoops program in the country and it's in their interest publicity- and recruiting-wise to look after the dude to a certain extent.
but yeah the system is fucked up, and even then it's not like louisville's gonna be helping out with his arthritis when he's 40 or whatever

39% growth in value in the past few years. Wow.

also not looking forward to hearing about bleacher report's listicle of 'most gruesome sports injuries in gif form' or a meme of ware screaming courtside with his head replaced by the spongebob starfish
i assume this is already happening; ppl are disgusting savages

"but yeah the system is fucked up, and even then it's not like louisville's gonna be helping out with his arthritis when he's 40 or whatever"
My whole outlook on college sports kind of changed from knowing a couple guys I worked with at a bar back in the early-mid 90s. Both of them had gotten hurt pretty bad playing special teams in football for Wisconsin and IU and then got dumped of the club with their scholarships revoked and the bills after the initial injury stuck on them.
Shite, if they would have gotten AT LEAST workers comp, they would have gotten their medical bills covered but if you are a marginal player especially in a big numbers sport like football and can't play...well too bad about that 'full ride'. There are tons of exceptions over the years I realize, but it happens quite a bit.
― earlnash, Monday, 1 April 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)
Syracuse's offense is absolutely sloppy and totally fugly, but their defense especially on the guards is very top notch.
It will be interesting to see how they matchup with Michigan, who defintely is more athletic.
Louisville looks so deep and atheletic, they are like Kentucky last year and just at a different level.
― earlnash, Monday, 1 April 2013 04:27 (thirteen years ago)
i happened to turn on the game while Ware was on the floor. at first assumed it was a neck injury/paralysis situation. checked twitter. horrible. have made a point not to watch the replay.
HOWEVER I had been thinking a shot of the bench's reax would be worth seeing. and it is. incredible gif up there. so kudos to lagoon for that one.
secondly, i'm an ilm guy and didn't even realize there was an I Love Hoops! this is very exciting.
agree w/ earlnash that UL looks like they are on a different level, though I don't think they are on UK '12's level. but when they are rolling they're scary good.
― alpine static, Monday, 1 April 2013 07:56 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know if Michigan is more athletic than Syracuse, and I think actually that they match up well. A lot of times this year Syracuse really stalled when their outside shooting went cold. It's kind of hard to believe that they lost 5 out of their last 10 games, but all of a sudden they seemed to lose their confidence in their offense. And really, everyone they've played in the NCAA tourn has seemed puzzled by the zone defense.
Maybe part of it is that it's hard to last two halves against Louisville's defense, especially in the guard play.

you re welcome alpine!

― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 April 2013 14:36 (thirteen years ago)
its totally profound

i am walking atm and felt my knee kinda buckle. i got so scared. i demand to be transported everywhere in a litter from now on. my legs should never touch the ground
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 April 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
I didn't watch it but just ffwwd it to the point where they wouldn't show the injury anymore and just showed the players/coaches reactions. That was def enough.
From what I understand, though, he can come back from that (clean break, minimal muscle damage) and it isn't as bad as a shredded knee acl/mcl (baron davis, shaun livingston)? Even though it looked worse.
He's already up on crutcheshttp://www.cardchronicle.com/2013/4/1/4170500/kevin-ware-is-already-up-and-walking-on-crutches

― lag∞n, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)
He must have already had a stress fracture there or something, no? That just doesn't happen.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
yeah was thinking the same
― lag∞n, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
people were speculating about peds? idk
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
they said there was a footabll player who had a similar injury and is now in the nfl. michael bush i think
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:18 (thirteen years ago)
lol i don't think PEDs result in you shattering your leg
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 April 2013 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
Hopefully not.
Also people bring up the career ending Theismann version of this injury, but he was like 36 when that happened and it was nearly 30 years ago. I bet Ware is back playing within a year.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
maybe if they cause you to jump high enough, like 30 feet up
― lag∞n, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
i think like with derrick rose the big hurdles in recovery will be mental instead of physical
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 April 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
they're saying peds weaken the bone sometimes? idk
― 乒乓, Monday, 1 April 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
All pro-level athletes should have titanium rods as bones tbf
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)
every time lebron does one of those monster dunks or alley oops i wonder if he's gonna crush his ankle upon landing
― J0rdan S., Monday, 1 April 2013 17:07 (thirteen years ago)
Pretty sure he isn't human tho
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:10 (thirteen years ago)
Durant is the one I worry about every time he lands
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:11 (thirteen years ago)
Doesn't automatically mean PEDs. People suspected the same of Bo Jackson, but that wasn't true then either.
My son had a similarly horrific bone break playing soccer and he was only 8 years old. Sometimes there are bone issues that you never know about until it's too late.
― The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Monday, 1 April 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
(I'd post the xray but it's nasty.)
How is he now?
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
he's fine but was in a wheelchair for like 8 weeks. Happened about a week before school got out --> awesome summer
― The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Monday, 1 April 2013 18:18 (thirteen years ago)
sad
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
the surgeons should insert a rod into his other leg, just in case. preemptive

otm
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)
I wonder if they'll take the hardware out. I assume so.
― The Great Forgiver (dandydonweiner), Monday, 1 April 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)
I can't decide if this is better or worse than the Johnny Knox injury, nor how horrible a person I am for even asking that question
― frogbs, Monday, 1 April 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
I think the knox one is way worse, personally.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
I think so too - I can't even imagine something more gruesome than that. But at least the Knox one wasn't really apparent in real time. Or even on replay, really - I had to rewind it a bit to really see that what we were seeing was not, in fact, two different players.
― frogbs, Monday, 1 April 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)
for broken leg pathos its still go for wand. will never get over that shit, and it wasn't even a person.

― k3vin k., Monday, 1 April 2013 23:30 (thirteen years ago)
also it wasn't PEDs
― k3vin k., Monday, 1 April 2013 23:33 (thirteen years ago)
Well I would hope you weren't on ped's at that age.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 1 April 2013 23:43 (thirteen years ago)
omg i just heard about this kevin ware thing somehow. via chris hayes' msnbc show. (that is how closely i am following the tournament this year.)
