because of how they have only played 4 seasons
― d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 05:01 (thirteen years ago)
when t-mac was 23 a lot of people probably said that it looks like he'd be in the hall of fame. then the rest of his career happened.
― d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 05:04 (thirteen years ago)
yes, it totally looked like he was going to be a hall of famer!
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:06 (thirteen years ago)
it didn't look "all but certain"
saying that a guy who averages 32-7-6-2 at age 23 looks like a hall of famer is reasonable and it was very surprising that he fell apart so quickly.
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:08 (thirteen years ago)
and he didn't even have 8 sprained ankles and surgery by then. Unlike someone else.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:09 (thirteen years ago)
tbf McGrady is probably borderline hall of fame
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:13 (thirteen years ago)
he'll probably get in when he's 60 or something
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:14 (thirteen years ago)
actually afaik every scoring champion has made it in and he has two of them, so I imagine he makes it, so great example Jord
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:16 (thirteen years ago)
Bernard King isn't in and he won the scoring title once, should get in eventually
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:18 (thirteen years ago)
ok guys
― k3vin k., Friday, 25 January 2013 05:18 (thirteen years ago)
i think my point here has been made

pp thinking about that TO
― k3vin k., Friday, 25 January 2013 05:20 (thirteen years ago)
basketball reference puts T-Mac's hall of fame probability at 58%, somehow Bernard King is at 38%
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:24 (thirteen years ago)
king had a way better career than McGrady iirc
― Clay, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:28 (thirteen years ago)
yeah idgi
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:30 (thirteen years ago)
actually they're very comparable except king won in the first round at least once.
― Clay, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:31 (thirteen years ago)
anyway you heard it here first: Curry has a 58% chance of being the GOAT 3pt shooter
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:33 (thirteen years ago)
Fair

It's not like what's being suggested is preposterous.
― tsrobodo, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:42 (thirteen years ago)
someones gonna be the greatest three point shooter of all time because players keep getting better at shooting it and keep taking more
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 05:57 (thirteen years ago)
whoever it is, they won't look like it until they're at least 37 years old
― Matt Armstrong, Friday, 25 January 2013 06:04 (thirteen years ago)

lol ILH does not do "ceiling is" / "looks like" / "might be" very well.
I mean, if you're gonna propose "Which newish guy has a chance to be the greatest 3pt shooter of all time?" who would you put in front of Curry? Esp. considering that this is his first full season as Warriors' go-to guy, with more inside/outside 3pt attempts coming his way now that Monta Ellis isn't taking all the shots there. And, w/ Ellis there hogging the shots, Curry's 3pt #s through three seasons have been amazing.
Think "looks like" here = "has the best chance at becoming; yes I understand that extrapolating from 3+ seasons doesn't take into account horrible future events but wtf people I never said I was Nostradamus / Edgar Cayce / w/e."
― ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:01 (thirteen years ago)
btw I support Matt in this argument, his phrasing was only slightly hyperbolic, what currys doing is unpresidented
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:03 (thirteen years ago)
truly unlike any president ever.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)
hey you know who is having an insane 3pt shooting year Kevin durant
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:04 (thirteen years ago)
xps Heh also fwiw basically every Yahoo! page over the last year has timed out in Chrome + Adblock for me and my life remains unaffected.
― ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:08 (thirteen years ago)
think we already established that the top 3 pt shooters of all time, with the exception of ray and reggie, are just above average 3 shooters who also play 25 seasons

ya kinda depends on what you mean by top xp
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
yeah durant's funny because he's always been a great shooter and has been known to be a great shooter, but this is the first year he's actually putting up great shooting numbers
― k3vin k., Friday, 25 January 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
hah well we can talk about best 3 pt shooters ever by % and w/ arbitrary number of 3's made, or by most number of 3's made
― 乒乓, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
really happy that steph curry is gonna turn out to be a better 3 shooter than kyle korver
you have to balance the % w year played attempts per game types of threes taken and then you will know the truth
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)
"Which newish guy has a chance to be the greatest 3pt shooter of all time?"
Becoming the G.O.A.T. requires so many factors to come together that such players come around very infrequently. so, most years the right answer to that question is "nobody".
afaics, no newish guys have demonstrated they have much of a chance. Curry has showed he has the stroke, but those ankles of his look to be so fragile that his odds of coming out on top of every other player of all time by the time he hangs it up look like about 50 to 1 against him right now. otoh, his becoming a top ten 3 pt shooter seems much more likely. More like 2 to 1. against.
And, if 3 pointers had been around in his day, the real G.O.A.T. was Freddie Brown.
― Aimless, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
afaics, no newish guys have demonstrated they have much of a chance
dude guys are shooting so many more threes and hitting them at such a higher rate its more like some newish guy is p much guaranteed to be the best ever
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 16:44 (thirteen years ago)
I mean ray Allen even shoots better than young ray allen
so, which newish guy do you like for g.o.a.t.?
― Aimless, Friday, 25 January 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
idk curry durant Ryan Anderson Kevin Martin some college kid Steve Novak Austin rivers
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 25 January 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
Right now Curry is #2 all-time in % (has about 2/3 as many shots as career leader Steve Kerr). I don't know Curry's attempts-per-game, but I'd guess it's higher than Top % guys but lower than Top Made guys. If he ended his career in the Top 10 of both, he's as strong a g.o.a.t. candidate as anyone. atm Nash is the only other guy in both Top 10s. Only 5 out of Top Made shot 40% or better; Jason Kidd is #3 and shot at 35% for his career.
w/r/t Curry's ankles, ask a Sonics (RIP?)/ Bucks fan if they thought Ray Allen would still be jacking 3pts in 2013.
― ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Friday, 25 January 2013 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
if this year is any indication he will have plenty attempts, career hes less than 1 attempt per game behind allen, tho obvs thats not an apples to apples comparison
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)
Nash shoots about 2 threes a month
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 25 January 2013 17:45 (thirteen years ago)
hes 10th in 3pt shots made ever
― lag∞n, Friday, 25 January 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)
Gotta love Matt Bonner:
"I don’t make sandwiches. Remember, I’m The Sandwich HUNTER, not the sandwich maker. Making a sandwich for myself would be like Ted Nugent giving up his guns and taking up laser tag."
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 25 January 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, plus I'd bet that Allen's attempts-per-game were lower during the 1st half of his career, where he was asked to be more of a slasher/driver scorer. Curry has the benefit of his team building around Curry's 3-pt shooting, ie they build a solid chunk of their offense around getting Curry 3pt looks.
Also <3 B0nner now and forever.
