remember when Melo punched Mardy Collins and ran away? He really shouldn't pretend to be the hardman.

i love melo when he is shredding euros as team usa's power forward and hate him as an inefficient un-clutch nba player

melos having a great year tho, last nights game excepted, garnet and pierce are tough matchups for him

"That's testy? That's testy?" Celtics rookie Jared Sullinger asek. "I've seen way worse stuff in the '80s and I wasn't even born in the '80s. So, if that's testy, I didn't see it."

Royce White on Hang Up and Listen podcast btw. Probably a much, much better platform for Royce to talk about "protocol" since guys like Pesca and Fatsis know how to ask questions better than most/any sports radio jockeys.
They ask about the protocol stuff in about fifteen different ways, and it sounds like Royce has trouble with Morey/coaching staff calling the minute-to-minute shots, rather than having a mental health professional on-hand as a decision-making filter between staff/Royce. I guess he was kind of a bubbleboy at Iowa St. and the staff was happy to genuflect to Royce/his doctors. Think the sad problem might be that Royce isn't a special snowflake in the NBA, even as a top draft pick, and the team -- while being pretty adamant about helping Royce -- would rather not have decisions being held up by mental health professionals having to OK every single decision.
Either way, happy to hear Royce come off as a young & mature guy. Just sad that it sounds like the protocol he wants really doesn't fit with NBA life, and it sounds like Royce is pretty serious about keeping the same protocols that he had in college.

― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
i kinda wish someone would ask him if he's willing to play in the d-league if all the protocols are met. or even just ride the bench all season (not as if the other rookies are getting many minutes at all).
there also seems to be a disconnect between his doctor (his family general practice doctor?!) and the fact that the rockets want a say in who the go-between doctor(s) are. complicated.

― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)
xps yeah, totally complicated. It sounds like his big issue is that the Rockets weren't keeping pace w/r/t mental health protocols (like, workplace disability and (reasonable) disability accommodations) and Royce is taking issue w/ that. I'm sure he could D-League it for a while, where he'd probably have much more freedom to press the pause button when he needed to. But, I think Royce knows that, if all goes well, he'll still have to go back up the the NBA/Rockets and deal w/ the same protocol problems. He's still kinda sketchy on what those protocols are; one gets the impression that they're basically, "If I'm having any problems related to my illnesses [which, w/ OCD + anxiety + PTSD, could be basically any problem], I have to have a Dr. on hand to help me decide the best decision moving forward. I don't take marching orders from the coaches/front office w/o checking w/ my Dr. first." In a normal office environment, I'm sure that's easier to accomplish; not so sure about the NBA.
And yeah, his family Dr., I think the same one that diagnosed him in high school! I'm sure he's sticking w/ her (think it's a her?) since she's had his best interests at heart. It's also probably a net positive that she isn't telling Royce, "Dude, NBA ball, suck it up, here's some pills. Have fun flying." Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of front-office people (and players!) who see that kind of support as straight-up enabling. Complicated!
What makes all of this even more complicated is that dealing with all of this must be doing a bad compounding number on his anxiety.

RUDY GAY, SF+ Smooth, long wing with high-arcing jump shot. Can shoot over the top of a defense.+ Outstanding transition finisher. Shies from contact and doesn't draw fouls.+ Doesn't see the floor once he starts dribbling. Underachieves defensively.Gay has All-Star talent, but his jump shot let him down last season and he hasn't picked up his game in other areas. For starters, there's the jumper. Gay's stroke looks wonderful, but it doesn't go in as often as you think. Last season he made only 33.8 percent of his long 2s, and his 31.2 percent mark on 3s dropped his career mark to just 34.7 percent. He can get his shot off against anyone, and there's value in that, but there's not a lot of evidence that he's an above-average shooter. What does have value is when he takes shots near the basket. Gay shot 64 percent at the rim and had a high foul rate for a jump shooter; in particular, if he gets a step going right, he can throw down some vicious dunks. He also ranked in the top quarter of small forwards in both rebounds and blocks. In a related story, he played a lot of small-ball 4 and at 6-foot-9 may continue doing so going forward. However, he regressed in other areas. Gay is guilty of dribble blindness, and while he's improved from a few years ago, he still ranked among the bottom 10 small forwards in pure point rating. Defensively, he's had a hard time converting elite athleticism into decent results. His length nets him a lot of blocks and steals, but the Grizzlies gave up 6.0 more points per 100 possessions when he was on the floor.
